DC Comics’ superheroes are often portrayed as powerful, god-like figures, and a common trait is resistance to death. Though many heroes have been killed and brought back to life through external forces or universe-altering changes, some possess the innate ability to heal from any injury and even resurrect themselves. This combination of invulnerability, rapid healing, and self-resurrection makes these heroes essentially unkillable – some can even exist without a physical body. Because of these incredibly resilient protectors, the DC Universe is safe from permanent loss.
Death in comic books has never felt truly final – characters often return. But these superheroes take surviving the afterlife to an extreme, defying death in remarkable ways.
10) Superman

Superman truly lives up to his nickname, the Man of Steel. Even with known vulnerabilities, he remains one of fiction’s most powerful characters and is incredibly difficult to destroy. His incredible strength, speed, and resilience allow him to survive even the most devastating attacks without lasting harm. He’s recently gained an even more powerful golden form, giving him three minutes of immunity to Kryptonite. Stories often show Superman living for centuries, and sometimes even becoming all-powerful. While he has died before, only the strongest opponents can defeat him, and even then, it’s rarely permanent.
9) Immortal Man

Klarn Arg, also known as Immortal Man, isn’t afraid of death – and his name hints at why. He first lived as a caveman but gained immortality after being exposed to radiation from a meteor. This made him a long-standing enemy of Vandal Savage, another immortal caveman. Beyond living forever, Immortal Man can heal from any wound. However, he can be killed by weapons crafted from the same meteor that gave him his powers. Despite this weakness, he’s essentially eternal, much like Vandal Savage.
8) Swamp Thing

Swamp Thing isn’t just a creature; he’s a powerful force of nature. Though he began as the scientist Alec Holland, he’s now an almost indestructible being made of plant life. He’s the embodiment of the Green, a universal consciousness that links all plants together. This connection gives him a form of immortality – even without a physical body, he can survive. Any harm he takes is temporary, as he can instantly transfer his awareness to another plant and regenerate a new form. As long as plant life exists anywhere, Swamp Thing will live on, protecting the Green.
7) Plastic Man

Despite appearing like a silly and carefree character, Patrick O’Brien, known as Plastic Man, is actually one of the most powerful people on the planet. He’s incredibly resilient and can shapeshift to an extraordinary degree – so much so that even Batman hasn’t planned for how to defeat him. Plastic Man completely controls his body at a molecular level, allowing him to survive and recover from almost any injury. He once literally came apart, scattering across the Atlantic Ocean, and reassembled himself perfectly well 3,000 years later! Even when a story focused on his body failing, as in the Plastic Man: No More miniseries, he still managed to survive.
6) Resurrection Man

Like the character Immortal Man, Resurrection Man – whose real name is Mitch Shelley – can’t permanently die. He was a test subject who received nanotechnology that not only brings him back to life but also gives him new powers based on how he was last killed. No matter how he dies – whether he’s ripped apart, exploded, vaporized, or anything else – the nanites always rebuild him. These nanites also stop him from aging, and he’s lived for over 850 years! While he might ‘die’ more than any other superhero, Resurrection Man always returns.
5) Lobo

Lobo, one of DC Comics’ toughest and most ruthless characters, is virtually indestructible. His alien body and talent for causing mayhem make him an incredibly powerful force. He can withstand attacks from even Superman, and his ability to heal is so strong that he can regenerate from just a single drop of blood. What’s more, every additional drop of blood creates a fully-powered clone of himself. Lobo was such a disruptive force, even in death, that both Heaven and Hell agreed he shouldn’t return – effectively making him a permanent resident of the mortal world, much to their relief.
4) Doctor Manhattan

Doctor Manhattan, the most powerful character in the Watchmen universe (originally Jon Osterman), gained his abilities after a lab accident broke him down to his atomic level. He then rebuilt himself, becoming essentially all-powerful and able to perceive all of time at once. Because of this, he can’t feel pain or be permanently harmed – not even a team-up of almost all DC’s heroes could defeat him. Ultimately, Doctor Manhattan chose to remove himself from existence to repair the multiverse and give a child his powers, offering a hopeful future. Otherwise, it remains unknown if anyone possesses the power to truly kill him.
3) Dkrtzy RRR

Being a Green Lantern means putting your life on the line for others, but Dkrtzy RRR, the Green Lantern of Space Sector 188, doesn’t face that danger. He’s a living math formula – proof that willpower can be calculated. Because he isn’t a traditional life form, he can’t even die. Existing as a purely conceptual being, Dkrtzy RRR is impossible to harm since he has no physical body. Most beings in the universe can’t even see him. As a fundamental part of reality and a living equation, he’s the most unusual and virtually indestructible member of the Green Lantern Corps.
2) Phantom Stranger

The Phantom Stranger is a truly mysterious being with no known origin or end. He’s incredibly powerful, with near-limitless knowledge and the ability to wield complex magic. Almost nothing can physically harm him – he can even survive fatal injuries. Existing outside of time and space, he’s one of the most powerful and enigmatic figures in the DC Universe. While he usually can only watch events unfold, he will intervene when the entire universe is at risk. Even so, neither humans nor gods can fully understand, much less destroy, the Phantom Stranger.
1) Spectre

The Spirit of Vengeance and the Spectre represent forces nearly impossible to destroy. The Spectre, a powerful angel who has existed for billions of years, has almost limitless power and is dedicated to punishing evil. While it needs a human host to operate in the world, powerful magic is required to separate or kill that host due to the Spectre’s defenses. Even if a host dies, the Spectre simply moves into a new one, remaining unharmed. Ultimately, nothing – no matter how powerful or mystical – can truly destroy this embodiment of divine anger.
