Hal Jordan & John Stewart Are Looking For Answers In New Image From HBO’s Lanterns (Exclusive)

Just got a first look at HBO’s Lanterns, and it seems Hal Jordan and John Stewart are hitting a momentary pause in what sounds like a pretty intense murder investigation. ScreenRant shared an exclusive image, and honestly, it’s intriguing to see these two iconic Lanterns taking a breather amidst all the action. It definitely hints at a series that isn’t afraid to blend detective work with the usual cosmic scope we expect from the Green Lantern universe.

This photo, showing Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Green Lanterns, is part of our preview of upcoming summer 2026 TV shows. It depicts John (Pierre) and Hal (Chandler) sharing drinks at a bar in a small town while investigating a murder. While the show Lanterns is partially set in Iowa, most of the investigation happens in Sheridan County, Nebraska, which has upset some residents.

Although the photo might make it seem like John and Hal are pausing their investigation, it’s more likely they’re connecting with people in the area, hoping to find clues. Their faces suggest they may have found the right location. The picture also prominently features Hal Jordan’s power ring.

As a huge fan, I was really intrigued by a moment in the Lanterns trailer. You see, John Stewart is the new guy, and he’s still waiting to earn his power ring. He actually asks Hal Jordan how much longer he has to wait – he’s been training for over two months already! But Hal doesn’t just give him an answer. Instead, he uses John’s eagerness for the ‘jewelry’ as a lesson. He leaves the ring on the car’s dashboard, jumps out while the car’s driving, and lets it roll towards a cliff with John still inside! It’s a pretty intense way to teach someone about focus, honestly.

The upcoming show Lanterns will be both a superhero story within the DC Universe and a hard-boiled detective series. While the main characters are galactic peacekeepers, it won’t be a typical mystery show. Instead, it will feature a unique partnership as Hal Jordan mentors his successor. And, because it’s part of the DCU, expect connections and surprises that tie into the wider shared universe.

Nathan Fillion, known for his role as Guy Gardner in the DC Universe, will be part of the upcoming show Lanterns. Ulrich Thomsen will play Sinestro, a character with a history as a Green Lantern and a former mentor to Hal Jordan. As Sinestro is Hal’s biggest enemy in the comics, his appearance on the HBO series will probably make Hal and John’s investigation more difficult.

It will be fascinating to watch how Hal’s history with Sinestro affects his relationship with John. Their interactions already show Hal won’t go easy on the new recruit. As a legendary and soon-to-retire Lantern, Hal understands the weight of the ring in a way John is still discovering.

While we don’t have a specific date yet, the show Lanterns will premiere on HBO this August. It will follow the release of Supergirl, which is coming out on June 26th. After the first season of Lanterns – which will have eight episodes – the next DC Universe project will be Clayface in October.
