As a passionate fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about James Gunn hinting at a unique take on Aquaman when he makes his entry into the DC Universe. Jason Momoa breathed life into Aquaman in the DCEU, transforming the DC’s oceanic jester into an underwater powerhouse. Arthur Curry was portrayed as a rebellious, reluctant King of Atlantis, sitting on the throne alongside his wife Mera, played by Amber Heard amidst some controversy. But now, I can’t wait to see how James Gunn will redefine this iconic character and bring a fresh perspective to the Aquaman storyline.
Aquaman’s cinematic adventure kicked off in “Justice League” and progressed into two standalone films, one of which holds the record as DC’s highest-earning movie. However, the other concluded the DCEU on a disappointing note, paving the way for the DCU reboot. Having wrapped up his underwater storyline, Momoa has now transitioned to DC Studios by embracing the role of the cosmic bounty hunter Lobo in “Supergirl,” a long-cherished dream come true for him.
The Peacemaker: Official Podcast serves as James Gunn to explain what is and isn’t canon from Season 1 in the DC Universe. During a rewatch of Episode 1 with actors Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee, they discussed a season-long Aquaman joke. In explaining its status, Gunn hinted at one way that the DCU’s Aquaman character will differ from Jason Momoa’s depiction in the DCEU.
Throughout the series “Peacemaker,” John Cena’s character frequently pokes fun at various DC superheroes, particularly Aquaman. He even spreads a humorous yet offensive gossip suggesting that Aquaman… indulges in intimate relations with marine life.
The climax of that joke occurs during the final episode of the season, where Momoa’s Aquaman joins other Justice League members following their tardy entrance to the butterfly barn fight. At this point, Peacemaker remarks, “Head off and find another aquatic creature to bother, jerk.
As a movie enthusiast, I must express that James Gunn effectively debunked any rumors about Aquaman’s relevance among DC fans, emphasizing that in the current narrative of the DC Universe, it’s highly improbable that Aquaman is as widely recognized as heroes like Superman or even Peacemaker in the upcoming season.
It seems improbable that Aquaman isn’t well-known among heroes in the DC Universe given that shows like ‘Superman’ and ‘Peacemaker’ have a second season. For those who wish to edit the DC Universe storyline, consider excluding scenes where Aquaman interacts excessively with fish.
In Peacemaker Season 1 and as the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) began to wind down, it appeared that ordinary citizens were fully informed about the Justice League’s existence. This likely stemmed from the League’s heroic actions to thwart Steppenwolf in their 2017 movie.
In the DC Universe (DCU), it appears that not only has the main superhero squad of DC not come together yet, but also, as far as the general public is aware, Aquaman hasn’t been actively participating in heroic deeds.
Here’s When Aquaman Could Join the DCU
In an interview with “Happy Sad Confused,” filmmaker James Gunn was questioned about the possibility of Aquaman or The Flash appearing in the DCU within the next couple of years. Gunn replied, “I don’t think it will be within the next two years for either of those characters.
At the moment, DC Studios appears to be primarily concentrating on reimagining the Trinity for their new universe, a process that was initiated with Superman. This transformation will carry on in the upcoming years, as Wonder Woman and Brave and the Bold are currently being scripted. It is hoped that both of these projects will see the light of day by 2028.
After the DC Universe solidifies its primary trio (the Trinity), there could potentially be opportunities for Aquaman and The Flash to shine more prominently, given that it will have been over five years since their individual DCEU movies featuring Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller didn’t fare well.
It remains uncertain which direction the DCU might steer Aquaman following Jason Momoa’s portrayal of a distinct, rough-and-tough Aquaman, who has added a unique edge to the frequently mocked member of the Justice League. Similar to how Gunn stayed true to classic comics with Superman, Aquaman may follow suit by emphasizing his royal underwater nature and some of its sillier elements.
