007 First Light Doesn’t Use Generative AI, as Art Director Warns to “Beware of Utopia”

So, I was reading up on the new 007 game, First Light, and it’s cool to hear that IO Interactive isn’t using any of that generative AI stuff in the actual development. It’s kinda ironic, though, because the story itself is apparently about AI and defense companies – it’s a plot point, but they built the game the old-fashioned way. Pretty interesting!

Art director Rasmus Poulsen chuckled at the connection, explaining that James Bond films frequently warn against the dangers of perfect societies. He pointed out that these ‘utopias’ can take many forms, and the current situation shares thematic similarities with that recurring idea.

He confirmed that they hadn’t used generative AI during the project’s development. This decision followed a significant conversation among the studio’s leadership team. While he didn’t want to share specifics – calling the situation “complicated” – he emphasized it was a substantial discussion.

007 First Light offers a fresh look at James Bond’s beginnings, showing his journey from a young naval officer rescuing soldiers in Iceland to becoming an MI6 agent. This Bond is more impulsive and takes bigger risks, but he’s also driven by strong beliefs. While his boss, M, and the inventor Q support him, the head of the 00 program, Greenway, is skeptical.

The new James Bond game, 007 First Light, arrives on May 27th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. While the Nintendo Switch 2 version has been pushed back to this summer, you can now find out more about three recently announced missions – including one where James Bond must track down an assassin at a glamorous gala. The game also features TAXIN, a mode letting you replay missions with challenges to unlock new weapons, upgrades, and outfits.
