While Bungie’s new game, Marathon, had a decent start with 2.2 million players trying it out in the first month, it hasn’t become a massive hit. Currently, the game has a peak of around 16,258 players on Steam at any given time, which is lower than expected for a highly anticipated title, especially one Bungie has been developing for years.
Julia Nardin, the creative director, didn’t directly address the specific question from GamesRadar, but she did say the team has a general plan for the story over the next few years. However, they’re keeping things flexible so players can contribute ideas and influence where the story goes. She explained that player input is a key part of what makes a live service game special.
Although the full history of Tau Ceti IV and what happened before the game starts is still a mystery, the developers plan to expand on the story in a way that respects its origins and creates a compelling future for players. Importantly, they want to avoid the problems Destiny 2 had with removing older content, ensuring that new players can still experience everything the game has to offer.
As a huge fan, I’m really excited to hear that you can jump into Marathon whenever you want! The developers want you to be able to discover the secrets of Tau Ceti’s history while still experiencing what’s happening now. They’re designing each season to be a fresh start, so even if you’re new to the game, you won’t feel lost – it doesn’t matter how long the rest of us have been playing!
It’s still early in the development of Marathon, but Season 1 added the Cryo Archive, a challenging end-game area featuring a race reminiscent of the original Marathon trilogy. Season 2: NIGHTFALL will see increased security from the UESC in response to activity there, including a new nighttime version of the Dire Marsh. Players can also look forward to a new Runner Shell, Contracts, new weapons, a feature called The Cradle for customizing character stats, and the highly anticipated Duos queue.
We don’t have any details about Season 3 yet – it’s currently under wraps. It’s possible Bungie is listening to player feedback and using it to plan the next season. We can definitely expect to uncover more of the story within the main ship, though!
