It’s always disappointing when announced video games are cancelled before anyone can play them. Titles like Star Wars 1313 and Wonder Woman are examples, but sometimes games persevere through difficult development processes and are eventually released. The Rat Queens game has faced a particularly long and challenging development, but a recent update brings some positive news.
A board game based on the comic Rat Queens faced a difficult start. Though a 2021 Kickstarter campaign raised over $338,000, the company originally in charge, Deep Water Games, didn’t complete or deliver the game. Now, five years later, Rat Queens co-creator Kurtis J. Wiebe is taking over to finally bring the project to life. He’s launching a new campaign on Backerkit with an updated version of the game featuring new artwork and improved gameplay. Importantly, backers of the original campaign will receive the finished game without needing to pay again.

This Looks Like The Rat Queens Game Fans Have Been Waiting For

Wiebe shared an update on the game’s campaign page, explaining the future plans and how the current team is addressing issues from the previous company. He announced that the game has new cover art, and even more significantly, all of the game’s artwork – including cards, villains, tokens, boards, and bosses – has been completely redrawn by co-creator Roc Upchurch.

The game has been redesigned with improvements based on player feedback. It also includes hidden bonuses to discover during the campaign. Players will encounter three distinct villain groups unique to this game, all set within the world of Rat Queens. Overall, the game features 27 playable characters and 3 challenging bosses.
Wiebe’s new company, Talespinner Games, is developing both the game and its accompanying campaign. They’ve been quietly working on this project for over a year, but it’s been difficult without any initial funding from the original Kickstarter. This new Backerkit campaign aims to raise the money needed to finish the artwork and pay for the game’s production.

If this campaign reaches its funding goal, everyone who originally supported the project will get a free copy of the game. Once the campaign starts, backers can confirm their Kickstarter email and pledge to unlock a special tier where they can claim their free copy. There will be optional add-ons available, but you don’t need to purchase them to get your game.
If you previously supported the original game, you can find links and details to confirm your pledge here. For anyone new who wants to support this game, the Backerkit campaign will begin this summer.
