Science fiction is a hugely popular movie genre, and for good reason. These stories are often captivating and make you think, allowing for compelling characters and exciting action. Sci-fi explores a wide range of topics – from time travel and alien encounters to the dangers of new technologies – offering a truly rich and entertaining experience.
Even though science fiction offers a huge variety of stories, worlds, and thrilling ideas, not all sci-fi movies are winners. Some are boring or just average, and others are truly terrible. This month, you can stream one of the most famously bad sci-fi films, Battlefield Earth, on Tubi. Starring John Travolta, it was a critical and commercial failure, but it’s strangely worth watching after all these years. It’s fascinating to see how ambitious the film was, and it’s also incredibly entertaining in a so-bad-it’s-good way.
Battlefield Earth Is a Mess (Which Actually Makes it Better)

As a huge cinema fan, I remember hearing about Battlefield Earth for years before it finally hit screens in 2000. It turns out the story behind the movie was almost as long as the runtime! The book, by L. Ron Hubbard, came out in 1982, and he was already trying to get it adapted into a film before he passed away in 1986. It wasn’t until John Travolta really became a major star – thanks to Pulp Fiction – that things started to gain momentum. He became determined to make the movie happen. Eventually, in 1998, a company called Franchise Pictures took it on, and Travolta himself put a lot of his own money into the project. By 1999, production was underway, and Travolta was really pushing it as this huge, epic science fiction film.
Initially, the film appears to have a compelling science fiction setup. It’s set in the year 3000, after aliens called the Psychlos invaded and took over Earth. Humanity has lost all its knowledge and abilities, now primarily serving as forced labor, mining gold for their alien overlords. A man named Jonnie sparks a rebellion against the Psychlos, but despite the promising premise, the film has significant flaws. It only covers half of the original novel – John Travolta planned for it to be two films – and the adaptation itself is poorly executed. The writing is weak, the acting is subpar, and the special effects are particularly bad.
Okay, so this movie is… a disaster. Seriously, everything about it is flawed. But here’s the weird thing: instead of trying to fix anything, it just embraces how awful it is, and goes completely over the top. There’s this bizarre plot point where humanity suddenly knows how to fly fighter jets and operate nuclear weapons – it makes absolutely no sense! It’s so clumsy, it even messes up the ending. But honestly, that’s where the fun begins. It’s a glorious mess! You know it’s not going to improve, but you’re completely hooked to see just how much worse it can get. Let’s be real, nothing is going to make this a good movie, but there’s a strange joy in watching it fall apart, especially when it’s free to stream. It’s a train wreck you can’t look away from.
