The Daily Beast describes it as a powerful series that honors the original novel, and RogerEbert.com highlights its impressive attention to both sweeping scenes and subtle details.
However, viewers haven’t been as supportive. Currently, Lord of the Flies has a 57% audience score on Popcornmeter, which tracks reactions from people who have seen the show. Many negative comments seem to stem from reactions to the cast’s diversity, with some critics admitting they haven’t even watched it but are reacting to the actors being non-white.
Online reactions to the show were overwhelmingly negative, with viewers using harsh language like “terrible,” “awful,” and even calling it “propaganda.” Some specifically criticized the casting choices, while others simply expressed strong disappointment with the adaptation, questioning how anyone could find it enjoyable.
However, some viewers offered strong criticisms beyond just complaining about common issues. One person wrote a detailed review of Lord of the Flies, giving it only half a star out of five. They explained that while they loved the book, this adaptation was very slow, and the music was awful.
