Everyone dislikes when a game’s frame rate drops, but we’re willing to be a little more forgiving with massive, monster-filled games like the new BeastLink.
Players familiar with the Earth Defense Force series know that a game isn’t truly an EDF experience unless the frame rate drops dramatically – often down to 10 frames per second. We have similar expectations for Grove Street Games’ new online game, hoping it pushes the limits in a similar way.
The trailer is promising, though it seems the film is trying to do a lot – perhaps too much – with its scope and goals.
We’re joking, but there’s a bit of truth to it. It’s strangely satisfying to see a game’s performance struggle when it’s displaying lots of detailed effects and physics.
Grove Street Games previously worked on the troubled remasters of the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy. Their contributions have now been removed from the updated Rockstar releases, allowing them to fully concentrate on this new and promising project.
Here’s its pitch:
BeastLink offers a unique and massive-scale experience where humans, vehicles, and giant creatures, known as Beasts, battle it out in cities that can be completely destroyed. Players fight through ruined urban landscapes to collect a valuable serum that allows them to connect with these towering Beasts, each offering different skills and fighting styles. You can play as both a human and a Beast, either alone or with friends in various game modes. Use a wide range of vehicles – from cars and helicopters to tanks and planes – to cause destruction and bring the city crashing down. The stronger your connection with a Beast becomes, the more powerful you are… but also the greater the risk of losing control.
The developers are excited about a new feature called SuperDestruction, which lets players completely destroy buildings and environments in the game.
To us, this feels like a blend of the Earth Defense Force series, the lesser-known Capcom shooter Exoprimal, and the anime Kaiju No 8. Except, you don’t have to worry about cleaning up the mess afterwards!
We’re planning to release an early access version this summer, and the full game will follow on PlayStation 5. PC players can sign up for a closed beta test starting later this week, on May 8th.
Multiplayer games can be hard to get popular, but we’re enjoying the old-school PlayStation 2 style and the wild, exaggerated monster battles in this one. It’s definitely a game to watch.
