The saying “With great power comes great responsibility” is incredibly well-known – everyone recognizes it! It’s a famous line originally spoken by Uncle Ben to Peter Parker in Spider-Man stories, and it’s remained a core theme throughout the character’s appearances in comics, television shows, and films, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to the filmmakers, the Russo Brothers.
Most moviegoers wouldn’t have noticed the alteration, and dedicated Spider-Man fans were likely too thrilled to see Sony and Marvel finally collaborating to care. For years, a disagreement between the studios had prevented Spider-Man from officially joining the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, and fans were just happy to see that resolved.
What was the big shift? It all comes down to one key moment – Spider-Man’s debut in Captain America: Civil War. That’s when everything changed in his story.
The Russo Bros. Changed Spider-Man Canon for the MCU
Russo explained that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man would be a very different character if he felt responsible for Uncle Ben’s death. The filmmakers decided against that interpretation, believing it would make the character much more burdened and intense. They specifically chose to portray a Spider-Man who wasn’t to blame, shaping a different kind of hero.
Changing a major event like this would almost certainly lead Miguel O’Hara and the Spider-Society to pursue the Russo Brothers and hold them accountable.
Spider-Man’s MCU Trauma Is Tied to Aunt May, Not Uncle Ben
The core of Spider-Man’s story revolves around the idea that Uncle Ben died because Peter Parker didn’t act when he could have, and that guilt drives him.
When Parker first developed his abilities, he had the chance to intervene and stop a petty criminal, but he didn’t. This same criminal later robbed and ultimately killed Uncle Ben, a scene famously portrayed by Andrew Garfield in the 2012 film The Amazing Spider-Man.
Spider-Man’s story is quite different in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unlike the versions played by Maguire and Garfield, where the death of Uncle Ben was a key event, Peter Parker’s MCU story barely mentions Ben. Instead, Aunt May, played by Marisa Tomei, is the central figure in his life. Her death at the hands of Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home almost led Holland’s Parker to commit murder, but he was stopped by Maguire’s Spider-Man.
Surprisingly, the Russo Brothers were responsible for Uncle Ben’s death, believing it was necessary for the larger good of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
