As a lifelong movie and TV fan, I was really saddened to hear about the passing of Ted Turner. He was a huge figure in the entertainment world, building up so many channels we all grew up with – Cartoon Network, CNN, TNT, just to name a few. After creating a massive media empire, he stepped back to focus on his health, and now, at 87, he’s gone. His impact on what we watch is undeniable, and he’ll be remembered as a true pioneer. It’s a real loss for anyone who loves TV and film.

Ted Turner, the founder of Cartoon Network, was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia shortly before turning 80. This brain disorder contributed to his hospitalization in 2025 after he developed pneumonia. Known early in his career as “The Mouth of the South,” Turner built a successful entertainment company based in Atlanta, Georgia. He was also a longtime sports owner, having purchased the Atlanta Braves baseball team in 1976 and later selling it to Time Warner.

Following the death of Ted Turner, CNN Worldwide’s current chairman and CEO, Mark Thompson, released a statement praising Turner as a deeply dedicated and courageous leader. Thompson noted Turner’s willingness to take risks and trust his instincts, describing him as the defining force behind CNN. He said Turner’s legacy is immense, and CNN will pause to honor his life and contributions to the world.
