Tymon Smektała, who has worked on the game Dying Light for nearly 13 years, has announced he is leaving his position as franchise director to pursue new opportunities. In a LinkedIn post, he expressed pride in what the team has accomplished during his time with Techland.
I’m incredibly grateful to everyone at Techland – both on the development and publishing teams – for their dedication, enthusiasm, and shared goal of creating the best zombie game possible, Dying Light. We achieved this together!
To our incredible community: your passion, involvement, and constant encouragement have always guided us. You played a huge role in making Dying Light what it is today.
Looking ahead, he said the Dying Light series is in capable hands and he’s eager to see where it goes next, planning to enjoy it as a player. He finished by saying he’ll always be a fan and wished everyone well.
Pawel Smektała has been involved with the Dying Light series since its start, beginning as a producer on the original Dying Light in 2013. He later contributed as a designer to Dying Light 2 Stay Human and most recently worked on Dying Light: The Beast, which came out last year and received great feedback.
Techland recently updated The Beast with a new game mode called Restored Land. This mode transforms Castor Woods into a large, open world where activities and resources aren’t endlessly repeatable – once they’re used, they’re gone. Techland calls it the “ultimate survival experience,” and it can be played separately from the existing One Life mode, which features permanent death.
Now that you’ve completed the main game, it’s worth considering what Smektała meant by “the next chapter.” He might just be speculating, now that he’s no longer directly involved. Or, he could be hinting at future content. Regardless, it’s been a great experience, and we’re excited to see what happens with him next.
You can find a detailed review of Dying Light: The Beast on our site, where we scored it 9/10. We also have more information about the Restored Land update available here.
