So far, Star Trek: The Last Starship has been a really compelling series. Writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing have boldly gone where few Star Trek stories have, setting the action in the 31st century during and after the devastating event known as The Burn. The series has delivered some major surprises, including bringing Captain James T. Kirk back to life! It’s also designed to be easy for new readers to jump in at several points, and issue number seven, hitting shelves on May 20th, is a perfect place to start. This new chapter promises to be the biggest and scariest one yet.
Issue #7 of Star Trek: The Last Starship sends the crew of the USS Omega on a journey to the enigmatic Deep Space Hope, a time when the Federation is on the brink of collapse. This installment boldly shifts the series into horror, creating a surprising and compelling story that leaves you wondering what will happen next.

Star Trek: The Last Starship #7 Pays Off on Seeds Sown From the Start

Things are looking grim in issue #7 of The Last Starship. Sato and the Omega are struggling to hold the Federation together as it rapidly falls apart, and a shocking death threatens to destroy it completely. A glimmer of hope appears with news from Deep Space Hope, suggesting a possible path forward. Unfortunately, when the Omega and her crew arrive, they discover the situation is far worse than they imagined, and a devastating betrayal occurs – one readers likely thought wouldn’t happen.
Putting spoilers aside, most Star Trek fans probably saw this major betrayal coming, considering who was involved. However, the way Kelly and Lanzing reveal it isn’t just a simple act of treachery or a mistake by those in charge. It feels much more malicious and complex, hinting at deeper issues we haven’t fully discovered yet. By the end of the issue, you’ll realize it was likely unavoidable, but you’ll still be shocked by how harsh it is.

This issue of The Last Starship truly shines because of its incredibly unsettling atmosphere—a chilling blend of horror and violence, both in the story and the artwork, as things fall apart on Deep Space Hope. While Star Trek often touches on scary themes, this installment goes all-in, creating a terrifying experience reminiscent of Event Horizon and Alien combined (though thankfully without the gruesome chestbursters!). It’s a fantastic step forward for the overall story, significantly raising the stakes and leaving readers eager to find out what happens next. The pacing is a little uneven in the middle, but overall it’s a compelling read that dramatically alters the story’s direction. It’s so good, in fact, that new readers will likely want to start from the beginning to fully understand how the story reached this point.
The new book, Star Trek: The Last Starship, will be available for purchase on May 20th. We’d love to hear your thoughts – share them in the comments below and join the discussion in the ComicBook Forum!
