Jake Reiner knows that his dad Rob Reiner will always stand by him—especially at Dodgers Stadium.
Almost six months after director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were tragically killed at their home in Los Angeles, their oldest son has spoken about how following the local baseball team helps him feel connected to his father.
Jake shared that his love for the Dodgers is deeply tied to his father. Speaking on his podcast, The Incline, he explained that this connection is something he’ll always share with his dad. “It’s something I’ve always connected with my dad first and foremost,” he said, “and it’s something I will continue to connect with him for the rest of my life.”
The sense of belonging and camaraderie is a big reason why the 35-year-old decided to come back to the show he co-hosts with Kevin Klein, even though his brother, Nick Reiner, is on trial for the murders of their parents. Nick, age 32, entered a not-guilty plea to two counts of first-degree murder with the added charge of multiple murders in February, and his next court date is set for September.
Jake shared that he was glad to be back on the podcast. He wanted to express his gratitude to everyone who had reached out since recent events, explaining he’s been trying to reply to as many messages as possible and appreciates all the support he’s received.
After remaining quiet for two weeks, Jake finally spoke out about the December murders of his parents, sharing his feelings in a personal essay.
In an essay posted on April 24th, Jake described the overwhelming grief of losing both parents suddenly. He wrote that no one could possibly understand the pain, and that he still struggles to accept it’s real, often waking up hoping it was all just a bad dream. He called it a living nightmare.

The actor, known for his role in Things Like This, shared that the loss of their parents in a devastating tragedy has been incredibly difficult for him and his sister, Romy, age 28.
“We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable,” he wrote.
Losing a parent is always incredibly painful, but losing both parents at once is unimaginably difficult. To then have your brother involved in the circumstances makes it almost too much to bear.
Moving forward, Jake made a singular request on behalf of his family.
“I just ask for love and compassion,” he added, “the same principles my parents lived by.”

Long before Rob and Michele Singer Reiner passed away, their son, Nick Reiner, openly discussed his struggles with addiction. He even worked with his father on the 2015 film Being Charlie, which focused on the topic of substance abuse.
Nick explained that he had been to rehab 18 times before turning 30.
In a 2016 interview with People magazine, he shared that he had experienced homelessness in three different states: Maine, New Jersey, and Texas. He described spending nights and weeks living on the streets, calling it a difficult time.
Two years later, Nick recalled an instance when he “wrecked” his home while high on drugs.
He explained on the Dopey podcast in 2018 that he had a difficult experience with drugs. He said he was high – likely on cocaine and another stimulant – for days, and ended up punching things inside his guest house, continuing for about ten rounds, as if in a boxing match.

According to sources who spoke with The New York Times, Nick was under a court-ordered mental health conservatorship from 2020 until 2021. A Los Angeles Superior Court clerk verified with the publication that the conservatorship ended in 2021.
Steven Baer, the court-appointed conservator and a licensed fiduciary, told the New York Times that mental illness is a widespread and often misunderstood problem, calling the situation a terrible tragedy. He did not offer any further details.

According to multiple sources at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on December 13, 2025, the director of When Harry Met Sally had a significant argument with his 32-year-old son. Friends of the family later confirmed to the L.A. Times that a fight occurred, and that guests observed the son behaving unusually.
According to two sources familiar with the event, Nick was causing disturbances at the party by interrupting people’s conversations.

The actress posted on Instagram on December 15th that she had seen them two nights prior, and they seemed healthy and happy. She added that she is now devastated and shocked by their loss.

On December 14th, around 3:40 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department investigated a death at a home in Brentwood, California, following a call they received the day after a Christmas party.
According to a statement from the LAPD, officers found two people inside the home, later identified as Robert and Michele Reiner.
The Robbery-Homicide Division’s Homicide Special Section began investigating how the deaths occurred.
According to NBC News, Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton stated that investigators will be speaking with many family members. Rob Reiner and his wife have three children: Nick, Romy, and Jake. Rob also adopted the daughter of his late ex-wife, Penny Marshall, named Tracy Reiner.

Rob and Michele didn’t die from natural causes; they appear to have been stabbed, according to a source close to the Reiner family who spoke with NBC News.
According to the LAPD, the initial investigation revealed that the Reiners were victims of homicide.

Around 9 p.m. on December 14th, while the police were investigating, Nick was caught on camera buying a Gatorade at an ARCO gas station near USC in downtown Los Angeles. According to footage obtained by MS Now, he was wearing a green jacket, jeans, and a ballcap, and carrying a red backpack.

Minutes later, the screenwriter was taken into custody near USC.

On December 16th, TopMob News confirmed that attorney Alan Jackson—known for previously defending high-profile clients like Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and Karen Read—is now representing Nick, who was arrested two days prior in connection with his parents’ murder.

On December 16th, as authorities prepared to publicly charge Nick at a Los Angeles courthouse, his lawyer informed the press that he hadn’t yet been given medical approval to appear in court.
According to reports, officials stated that all inmates require a medical checkup before being taken to court. They are optimistic that the individual in question will be cleared for transport tomorrow.

On December 16th, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that his office will be charging Nick with two counts of first-degree murder, and will also pursue a special circumstance allegation due to the multiple victims involved.
Okay, so the District Attorney just said it – Nick didn’t just attack his parents, he actually used a knife! A knife! They’re calling it a ‘special allegation,’ like it’s some legal term to downplay how awful this is. It’s just… a knife. He personally used a dangerous weapon on his parents. I can’t even wrap my head around it. It’s horrifying, absolutely horrifying.
He explained that if convicted, the maximum punishment could be life in prison with no chance of release, or even the death penalty.
Nick was formally charged Dec. 16.

Police believe Rob and Michele were likely killed about 12 hours before their bodies were found around 3 p.m. on December 14th.

On December 17th, the medical examiner concluded that both Rob and Michele died from multiple cuts or stab wounds.

During a court appearance on January 7, 2026, Nick’s lawyer, Alan Jackson, informed the court he was no longer representing him. Nick will now be represented by a public defender, according to a reporter from MS Now who was present.
The Reiner family released a statement to TopMob News saying they are confident in the legal system and won’t be making any further comments about the ongoing case.

On February 23rd, Nick appeared in court in Los Angeles and pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, with prosecutors alleging he committed multiple murders.
Oh my gosh, it’s just… everything with him is so frustrating! First, he had Alan Jackson as his lawyer, but now it’s Kimberly Greene – I guess things weren’t working out? And the Public Defender’s office? They’re being SO tight-lipped! They put out this statement saying they won’t talk about anything regarding his case, not even the initial hearing on April 29th, and not for a long time, apparently. It’s killing me, I need to know what’s going on!
