What’s fascinating about science fiction is how its meaning can change over time. Stories that once seemed like distant fantasies can feel surprisingly relevant – or even eerily prescient – as technology advances. Sometimes we’re amazed by how accurately sci-fi films predicted the future, and other times it’s fun to see what they got wrong. But occasionally, revisiting these stories reveals a new level of unsettling relevance. That’s the case with Steven Spielberg’s ambitious sci-fi thriller starring Tom Cruise, which is now available to stream on Hulu.
Released in 2002, Minority Report is based on a 1956 story by Philip K. Dick. The film takes place in 2054 and centers on John Anderton (Tom Cruise), who leads a police unit called Precrime. This unit uses three psychics—known as Precogs—to predict violent crimes and arrest the future criminals before they act. The combination of director Steven Spielberg and star Tom Cruise generated a lot of excitement for the movie, making it a box office success and leading to a video game and a short-lived television series.
Minority Report Is More Unsettling Than Ever
What makes Minority Report so unsettling, even today, isn’t that the movie’s technology has become reality, but how easily our current technologies could be misused in similar ways. While police aren’t using psychics to foresee crimes and make preemptive arrests, we increasingly rely on algorithms and artificial intelligence in all areas of life. It’s not hard to envision a future where these technologies analyze data to predict crime, potentially leading to interventions before anything actually happens.
The idea of predicting and stopping crimes before they happen might seem appealing, but the film Minority Report warns us why it’s actually a dangerous concept. The movie shows how a system designed to prevent crime can be twisted and abused, leading to unfair outcomes. The ethical issues raised in the film remain relevant and thought-provoking more than 20 years after its release, making it feel especially timely and unsettling today. You can currently watch Minority Report on Hulu.
