Half Man stars unpack pivotal episode 3 scene, with “subtle” key to understanding Ruben’s violence

*Warning – contains spoilers for Half Man episode 3.*

You can now watch the third episode of Half Man on BBC iPlayer. In it, Niall finds himself in a difficult situation.

Niall is caught in a difficult situation. His mother, along with Ruben and Ruben’s mother, Maura, all want him to testify that Alby sexually assaulted Ruben before attacking him. However, Niall has mixed feelings about Alby and feels guilty about the incident, making his decision complicated. The situation is further complicated by recent reports that Ruben has been volunteering at a children’s center, suggesting a change in his behavior.

While driving, Ruben notices Niall seems troubled and uncertain. Frustrated, Ruben abruptly pulls the car off the road and into a field, then forces Niall out to demand an explanation.

He makes Niall say over and over that Alby groped him, as the pair have an all out confrontation.

Both Mitchell Robertson (who plays Niall) and Stuart Campbell (who plays Ruben) agree that this scene is a standout moment for them, and a personal favorite they shared together.

Robertson shared that a scene with Niall and Ruben, filmed in a field with the city in the background, was a favorite. He explained that director Stuart felt it captured a realistic, almost documentary-like quality – like a real moment that was simply observed and recorded, making it feel very genuine and human.

Campbell explained that the moment the car flips – and everything that follows – feels like you’re watching from above. It doesn’t feel artificial or planned, and while it doesn’t completely explain his actions, it offers some insight into why he behaves the way he does.

That scene has a really delicate quality. Filming it was surprisingly emotional and freeing for me, but it also felt very honest and real.

Ruben has shown a pattern of angry behavior throughout the first three episodes. Most recently, he exploded in anger and physically tried to reach Niall after Niall revealed something important in court.

Robertson also highlighted the evolving relationship between the characters. He felt the scene in the field was a turning point, where tensions and feelings really came to a climax.

The Niall we see in that scene would never have spoken to Ruben that way at the beginning of the series. It creates a sense that, perhaps, they’re finally meeting each other as equals during that confrontation. It’s not necessarily a fact, but that’s the impression it gives.

It feels like this could be the start of something real – a genuine connection where two people are truly engaging with each other.

Campbell explained that the scene happened organically. He particularly loved a moment where the actor was positioned diagonally and looked up at him, noting that this wasn’t something they’d discussed beforehand.

I distinctly remember how freezing it was that morning. We both showed up wearing really bulky robes – possibly even two layers each. I got there early, before sunrise, and immediately thought, ‘There’s no way we can film today. It’s just too cold.’

Robertson mentioned there was frost on the ground. Campbell responded, describing it as looking like snow, and explained that things then unfolded naturally, without much conscious thought. He felt the outcome seemed genuinely realistic.

Half Man will continue on BBC iPlayer at 6am on Friday 15 May.
