Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic Team Continues to Bring on Former KOTOR, Mass Effect Devs

The new game, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, shares a lot with BioWare’s classic Knights of the Old Republic – even some of the same developers are working on it. Arcanaut Studios is expanding its team to support the project, bringing in experienced talent like Casey Hudson, who directed Knights of the Old Republic, and Pascal Blanché, a veteran artist from Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry. Rounding out the leadership team are Ryan Hoyle as CTO and Caroline Livingstone as the director of production and performance.

James Hoyle, known for his contributions to games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, is joined by Lindsay Livingstone, a veteran with an extensive history at BioWare. Livingstone has worked on multiple BioWare RPGs, including Neverwinter Nights and Dragon Age, as well as the Mass Effect series. Melanie Faulknor, previously involved with Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age 2, and Dragon Age: Inquisition, joins as director of external developments. Rounding out the team is Den Fessenden, a senior technical designer and industry veteran who also worked on the original Knights of the Old Republic, as reported by Eurogamer.

The fact that so many developers from BioWare are working on the new game connects to what Lucasfilm Games VP and GM Douglas Reilly has said about Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. He recently explained that the game will build on the history of Knights of the Old Republic by delivering a similarly immersive, story-focused role-playing experience with meaningful choices. The team at Arcanaugt Studios includes many of the people who originally created that beloved legacy.

Hudson, the CEO of Arcanaut Studios, explained that the new Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic game won’t continue the story from Knights of the Old Republic. He said this is because Disney’s purchase of Star Wars meant they reset the established backstory and disregarded previous expanded universe content.

According to Hudson, when the team made the original KOTOR, they aimed to create the ultimate Star Wars game – the kind of adventure they always wanted as fans. Now, 25 years later, their goals for Fate of the Old Republic are just as big. They see this as a chance to build a modern, definitive Star Wars experience, using the latest technology and design. The new game will feature a completely original story focused on giving players freedom and truly immersing them in the Star Wars universe, just like KOTOR did.

The game Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was first shown in December 2025 with a computer-generated trailer featuring a female lead character and two companions. Although Arcanaut Studios hasn’t given a specific release date, they’ve stated it will be available before 2030. The platforms the game will be on haven’t been confirmed, but it’s expected to be released on PC and the latest gaming consoles.
