The show just ended with an almost flawless finale, and it arrived when it was needed most. While the move of the Marvel series from Netflix to Disney+ had a rough beginning, Season 2 proved the showrunners had a clear vision. Daredevil’s success was just the first step in bringing the Defenders team back together.
The second season brought back Jessica Jones, and ended with a welcome appearance by Luke Cage. This is great news for fans who were disappointed when Netflix canceled its Marvel shows. Now, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a chance to focus on the gritty, relatable heroes that made those shows so popular, rather than just large-scale team-up movies.
The MCU Needed to Return to the Street-Level Heroes
With Charlie Cox confirmed to reprise his popular role as Matt Murdock, it seemed likely other characters would also return. While Daredevil was the most talked-about, fans also hoped to see the Punisher and Jessica Jones back. It appears that’s now happening, and it’s exactly what the Marvel universe needed.
Jon Bernthal will be in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and his new movie, One Last Kill, is nearly finished. There’s also been positive news regarding Krysten Ritter reprising her role as Jessica Jones in the last three episodes of Daredevil: Born Again, even though her powers were reduced. The return of Luke Cage in Daredevil helped improve fan reception.
As a fan, I was absolutely thrilled to see Mike Colter unexpectedly return as Luke Cage at the end of the finale! It felt like a huge breath of fresh air. We’ve been hoping to see Luke and Jessica Jones finally build the family they have in the comics, and this feels like the first step toward that. Honestly, it also gives me a lot of hope for what’s coming in the MCU!
Reviving these characters isn’t just about appealing to fans’ fond memories – it’s a smart move creatively. Recent large-scale films in the franchise have been missing the energy that defines it, and it seems they’re trying too hard to generate buzz by bringing back Chris Evans as Captain America, even though his story had a satisfying ending in Avengers: Endgame.
As a huge cinema fan, I’m thrilled to see Jessica Jones and Luke Cage back in the mix! It’s so good to revisit these street-level heroes that I’ve always loved. And honestly, even though these characters aren’t new, this feels like a really exciting and revitalizing move for the universe.
The Netflix Marvel Universe Could Save the MCU
A major disappointment for many when Disney acquired Marvel was the cancellation of the popular Netflix shows. While Daredevil had a good run, several other series were cut short before they could really develop. Bringing those shows back would give those characters and stories the attention they deserved, and offer something new to viewers because the possibilities for big-screen Marvel movies are starting to feel limited.
Beyond Luke and Jessica becoming parents, there are a few remaining details to wrap up. Their daughter, Danielle, is named after Danny Rand, who Luke befriended during their time together in the series The Defenders. Although that series was brief, it marked the beginning of a promising friendship between the two men.
Power Man and Iron Fist have a strong connection in the comics, establishing a business called Heroes for Hire. This venture functioned as a security and investigation service, which would complement Jessica Jones’ Alias Investigations – a connection hinted at in the finale of Daredevil: Born Again. This type of team-up is something fans have been wanting for a while.
The appeal of Netflix’s Marvel shows wasn’t about epic battles with aliens, but the personal stories that followed. Shows like Jessica Jones explored the effects of trauma, and The Punisher thoughtfully added to conversations about PTSD. The Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t always need massive events. Bringing these characters back hints that this new phase might focus on the familiar, character-driven stories fans enjoyed.
