The Boys’ 2027 Spinoff Is Hurting Its Final Season

A new spin-off of The Boys is scheduled for 2027, but it’s starting to impact the storyline of the main show’s final season. Previous spin-offs, Gen V and Diabolical, were generally successful and added to the world without significantly altering The Boys‘ main plot. However, the upcoming spin-off, Vought Rising, is different – it’s beginning to directly affect the events of the final season.

Prime Video is creating a prequel series called Vought Rising that will explore the origins of Vought as a powerful global company. The show will feature several classic superheroes from The Boys – including Soldier Boy and Bombsight – and will delve into their backstories. These characters are also playing a key role in wrapping up the story of The Boys in its fifth and final season, particularly concerning V-One, the very first version of the Compound V substance that gives Supes their powers and immortality.

Since episode 2 of season 5, Homelander has been hunting for V-One, while The Boys have been racing to find it first, hoping to prevent him from becoming virtually unstoppable. By the end of episode 6, Homelander finally got what he wanted, unexpectedly making the events and characters from the ‘Vought Rising’ storyline much more important to the final season of ‘The Boys’. While I’ve personally found this season’s story compelling, online discussions suggest some viewers believe the ‘Vought Rising’ setup is actually hurting the show’s conclusion.

While the main characters in The Boys have definitely grown, there’s room for even more development. After the dramatic ending of season 4 – with Butcher’s turn towards villainy and the team falling apart – fans naturally hoped for more conflict, answers, and deeper emotional connections in season 5. Those elements are present, but without the clear groundwork laid by the Vought Rising storyline, the impact feels somewhat lessened.

How The Boys Season 5’s Ending Could Have Balanced Vought Rising’s Set-Up

While it was good that The Boys explored Vought’s history, it could have done so more subtly, particularly in the final season. Focusing on Soldier Boy and simply mentioning V-One – and the Supes who have it, like Soldier Boy, Bombsight, Torpedo, Private Angel, and Stormfront (first introduced in season 5, episode 2) – would have been sufficient.

The mention of Vought Rising is enough to grab attention; the details about Bombsight and his conflict with Soldier Boy weren’t crucial. The only part of Vought Rising that truly benefits The Boys season 5 is the backstory connecting Soldier Boy and Stormfront/Clara. Their relationship is why Soldier Boy ultimately gave Homelander the V-One. Therefore, the Bombsight storyline could have been cut to allow for more focus on Soldier Boy and Clara’s history.

Since both Clara and Soldier Boy originated in The Boys comic series, featuring their connection in the show’s final season felt more natural than introducing the entirely new storyline of Vought Rising. Furthermore, the show could have easily used a character already established in the main narrative to make the V-One story arc work effectively.

Bringing a character like Queen Maeve back into the story could have given her a crucial part in stopping Homelander. For example, revealing she was the one who originally discovered V-One, only to lose it to him, would have been a satisfying development for fans of The Boys and explored the important history between her and Homelander.

While this is just one idea, The Boys could have used a variety of different characters to expand on the V-One storyline instead of focusing on those from Vought Rising. Doing so would have allowed the show to develop its main characters more fully, making their eventual conclusions more meaningful. As it stands, introducing these new characters feels like a clear setup for the 2027 prequel, potentially lessening the impact of the current storyline.
