Billie Eilish Details “Frustrating” Struggle With Tourette’s Syndrome

Billie Eilish isn’t going to let Tourette syndrome make all of her moments its own. 

Billie Eilish recently talked about how she deals with involuntary movements and sounds – symptoms of her neurological condition – while living her life in the public spotlight.

Billie Eilish shared on the Good Hang podcast with Amy Poehler that she has Tourette’s syndrome, which causes vocal tics. She explained that her tics are usually just noises she can mostly keep under control, though sometimes words will become tics for a period of time.

Tourette syndrome is a lifelong condition that causes involuntary tics – sudden, repetitive movements or sounds. These tics can include blurting out words or noises, sometimes unintentionally offensive. A 24-year-old woman, diagnosed with the condition at age 11, says she actively tries to control her tics when she’s in public, like during interviews or appearances.

She explained that she spends all her energy holding back her tics while she’s around others, and then feels like she has to release them in private.

Amy commended Billie for openly discussing her condition, explaining it aided her in managing her own intrusive thoughts. Billie, in turn, highlighted how many people misunderstand Tourette’s syndrome.

Billie described Tourette syndrome as feeling like having intrusive thoughts that you’re forced to verbalize. She explained that a common misunderstanding is people reacting with concern when someone has tics, when actually, experiencing tics is perfectly normal for those with the condition.

And Billie emphasized that people don’t notice how much effort it takes to suppress her tic. 

She explained that she’d been constantly clenching her knees and elbows throughout the conversation. Being on camera, she was focused on controlling her tics, doing her best to suppress any visible movements so she wouldn’t be distracting, even though she was enjoying herself.

As she put it “That’s how we as people with Tourette’s pretty much spend our days.”

Despite her own struggles, though, Billie noted she feels lucky to have some power over her tics. 

She acknowledged that not everyone with Tourette’s even has the ability to control their tics, and she finds it deeply frustrating when others don’t realize that’s the case.

Billie has openly discussed her Tourette’s syndrome for years, even telling David Letterman in a 2022 interview that she enjoyed talking about it.

She admitted she enjoys discussing the topic, finding it fascinating, even though she’s completely baffled by it and doesn’t understand it herself, as she shared on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.
