Is It Almost Dragon Quest 12 Time? Pray to Yuji Horii and the Big Slime in the Sky

Fans are eagerly awaiting news about Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, and a special 40th anniversary livestream on May 27th might finally deliver an update.

In a YouTube video which has since been delisted, series creator Yuji Horii confirmed:

Join us for a livestream on May 27th! We’re planning to reveal details about our next game, and we’ll have plenty of other exciting news to share, so be sure to tune in.

As Gematsu noted, a comparable celebration took place for Dragon Quest’s 35th anniversary in 2021. That event revealed several new games, like the HD-2D Remake of Dragon Quest 3 and Dragon Quest Treasures.

It’s funny, Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate was announced at the same event, but we haven’t heard anything about it for five years. It feels like we should be getting an update soon!

Although Horii didn’t say “Dragon Quest 12” by name in the video, it’s likely that’s the game he meant when discussing their next project.

Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age originally came out in Japan in 2017, making it nearly a decade old. It was then released internationally in 2018, followed by a more complete version called the Definitive Edition in 2020.

Since then, Square Enix has been consistently expanding the Dragon Quest fanbase around the world through updated releases and remasters, with their latest being Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined earlier in 2024.

It feels like the right moment for a true sequel to us.
