5 Things That Still Don’t Make Sense About KPop Demon Hunters

The movie KPop Demon Hunters is now Netflix’s biggest hit, and it’s still incredibly popular. It’s expected to become a large franchise, with a sequel already planned, awards being won, and exciting collaborations in the works. It’s not hard to see why people love it – the songs are catchy, the visuals are stunning, and the strong female leads are captivating.

While KPop Demon Hunters isn’t perfect, its backstory could be more developed. Some parts of the Netflix movie don’t quite make sense, even when you try to understand them. Hopefully, a sequel, KPop Demon Hunters 2, will have the opportunity to explain these things in more detail.

5) How Faulty the Honmoon Is at the Beginning

In KPop Demon Hunters, the Honmoon is a magical barrier protecting the human world from demons, and Gwi-Ma wants to tear it down. The Saja Boys are sent to weaken this barrier, but it’s initially unclear how they manage to get through. The Honmoon’s power comes from music and unity, so the conflicts between the Saja Boys and HUNTR/X – and even within HUNTR/X itself – naturally make it more vulnerable. However, it seems strange that the boy band is able to infiltrate the barrier so easily at the start, suggesting they have a hidden source of power. Adding to the mystery are the demons that appear right away, as their numbers seem too high considering the barrier hasn’t fully broken yet.

4) Gwi-Ma’s Motivation in KPop Demon Hunters

Gwi-Ma is the primary antagonist in KPop Demon Hunters, ruling over the demon world. He’s determined to destroy the barrier between Earth and his realm, though his reasons aren’t fully explained. While gaining access to humans would increase his power and expand his territory, it’s unclear what his ultimate goal is, making him feel somewhat underdeveloped as a villain. Gwi-Ma’s motivations and past could benefit from further exploration. The story tends to focus on his followers instead, which is understandable, but it leaves viewers disconnected from the main villain and what he’s trying to achieve.

3) Mira & Zoey Not Knowing Rumi Was Half-Demon

In KPop Demon Hunters, Rumi struggles with the fact that she’s half-demon, a secret she keeps from her close friends Mira and Zoey. Given how much time the three girls spend together – constantly traveling and staying in the same places – it’s hard to believe she’s managed to hide it. While her demonic markings aren’t always visible, it seems unlikely she’s never revealed them, especially since they appear several times throughout the movie. Keeping such a big part of herself hidden from people she’s constantly with just doesn’t feel realistic.

2) A Single Trio of Demon Hunters Is Responsible for Keeping Them at Bay

The main characters in KPop Demon Hunters are great, but it feels unrealistic that just three people are responsible for protecting the world from demons. The movie doesn’t explain why these three were chosen, or how they even find new demon hunters. Given that demons seem to appear frequently and in many places, it’s hard to believe three people could handle everything. One fan pointed out a good question: are the demons only active in South Korea, or do they appear globally? If it’s the latter, the HUNTR/X team’s job seems nearly impossible – unless there are other groups like them working in secret.

1) The Demons Are Inconsistent Villains

While Gwi-Ma seems like the main villain in KPop Demon Hunters, the demons themselves initially appear as the antagonists. However, the movie doesn’t consistently show them as villains. Some demons are portrayed as purely evil and deserving of being destroyed, while others were once human and still possess some goodness. Rumi starts to feel sympathy for these more complex demons, but the movie doesn’t fully explore that idea. We feel for characters like Jinu and the Saja Boys, but they can’t be fully saved or restored. This mixed messaging is confusing, and it’s something the sequel, KPop Demon Hunters 2, should address.

Okay, so I’m really into KPop Demon Hunters, but honestly, there’s something about it that just doesn’t quite click for me. I’m curious to hear what you think doesn’t make sense! Let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum – jump in and share your thoughts!
