As fans eagerly await season 2 of ‘Ludwig,’ Anna Maxwell Martin, the show’s lead actress, has offered a sneak peek at what’s to come in the new episodes.
I’m really excited – I just heard that filming for season two is completely finished! It stars David Mitchell playing two roles – both a man and his brother – and the story revolves around his character trying to find a missing detective, with help from the detective’s wife, Lucy (played by Martin). I’ve been following this show, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.
Speaking about the upcoming second season of the Apple TV+ show Ludwig, the actress said it’s fantastic, describing it as “really, really good.” She shared this ahead of her role in the new drama Star City.
I’m drawing a blank and honestly, I’m worried about saying too much. I’m not even sure what I can share! But I will say this: it’s fantastic – I think it’s even improved on the first season.
She added: “I think we’ve sort of built on what we had, and we’ve made it even better.”
Mitchell has previously discussed season 2, explaining to TopMob that the show deliberately keeps the details of his character’s role unclear. This is because not everyone within the police force fully supports his position.
He also needs to hide the fact that he pretended to be a police officer to solve cases for a while. If anyone finds out, five murderers could go free, and he’d likely face serious consequences too.
Although we don’t know when season 2 will be released, some early photos have been shared. They confirm the return of Mitchell, Martin, Dipo Ola as DCI Russell Carter, Dylan Hughes as Henry Betts-Taylor, Dorothy Atkinson as DCS Carol Shaw, and Ralph Ineson as Chief Constable Ziegler.
I’m really excited to see some fantastic new faces joining the cast! We’ve got Mark Bonnar, who I loved in Line of Duty, playing a newspaper editor named Gareth Fisher. Sian Clifford, brilliant in Fleabag, is going to be playing a local MP, Joanne Kemper. And adding to all that, Ben Ashenden from Black Mirror will be DC Ethan Cole, and Rumi Sutton, who was great in After the Flood, is joining as DC Caitlin Sullivan. It’s shaping up to be a seriously strong ensemble!

Season two begins right after the events of season one. John Taylor, known as ‘Ludwig’ and played by Mitchell, is now a consultant helping the Cambridge Police solve incredibly difficult crimes. He works with DCI Russell Carter (Ola) on cases that seem impossible to crack. The season’s storyline was once again crafted by the show’s creator, Mark Brotherhood.
Now that he doesn’t have to pretend to be someone else, John is embracing his true self – a gifted puzzle-solver who struggles with everyday tasks. However, his twin brother, James, remains missing. Because John now works at the station, he’s not allowed to use police resources to find James or investigate what James was working on before he disappeared.
John is determined to find his brother James, and Lucy, James’s wife and John’s sister-in-law, is just as driven. They’re both committed to solving the mystery and bringing James home. While one disguise has been revealed, a new deception is already unfolding.
You can watch the second season of Ludwig later this year on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The first season is currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
