EastEnders boss teases “emotional” Denise Fox scenes from blood cancer storyline after 20 years on the show

Denise Fox has lived in Walford for two decades, but she’s about to face her biggest challenges yet, starting in 2026.

EastEnders has revealed that popular character Diane Parish will be diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, a type of blood cancer, in an upcoming storyline.

Viewers have noticed the character becoming increasingly exhausted lately, and she’s about to receive a diagnosis that will deeply affect her and her family.

At the 2026 BAFTA Television Awards, TopMob spoke with executive producer Ben Wadey, who shared more details about the show’s plot.

Wadey explained that the show excels when it portrays realistic and impactful stories, like Ravi’s struggles with mental health – a performance Aaron Thiara delivered exceptionally well – and the challenges of receiving a life-altering diagnosis.

We wanted to give Di Parish, who’s been with EastEnders for 20 years, a storyline that would help her grow as an actress and really explore the character of Denise. We wanted to ask: who is Denise Fox after being on the show for two decades? This story allows us to do that, and early footage shows Di is going to deliver a powerful and emotional performance. It’s going to be a really strong story.

The show has been collaborating with the charity Blood Cancer UK to ensure the storyline is realistic and accurate. This includes showing how Denise’s background as a Black woman affects her experience with the illness.

As a film and TV enthusiast, I was really pleased to hear about the work Blood Cancer UK did with EastEnders. Their CEO, Helen Rowntree, shared that it was a real honor for her and her team to advise the show’s writers, making sure Denise’s story felt authentic to people actually living with blood cancer and their families – which is so important for raising awareness and understanding.

As a supporter, I know blood cancers – like leukaemia, lymphoma, and myeloma – can affect anyone. It’s heartbreaking because even though they don’t care who they impact, the journey and how well people do can be very different, and that includes depending on their background and ethnicity.

She explained that facing an aggressive blood cancer like acute myeloid leukemia is especially difficult for Black patients, who often encounter extra hurdles. They hope the increased attention to blood cancer will help people understand the disease better and bring awareness to a cancer that often goes unnoticed.

Viewers may remember that Denise wasn’t shown in the episode jumping forward to New Year’s Day 2027, but it was revealed she was alive and had been fighting with her husband, Jack Branning. Will their relationship survive the challenges to come?

As a total TV buff, I just wanted to let you know about the TopMob: What to Watch app. It’s a great way to stay up-to-date with everything happening on shows like EastEnders – you can even add it to your watchlist! I downloaded it because it gives you daily recommendations and cool features, so I figured I’d share!
