Fans hoping for a show specifically about the Marauders – a popular request for nearly twenty years – will have to be patient. Although HBO’s new Harry Potter series will introduce these four wizards to a new audience, no actors have been announced for the roles, even though James Potter appeared in The Philosopher’s Stone. However, the third season, which will cover The Prisoner of Azkaban, is expected to finally reveal the story of Peter Pettigrew’s betrayal and will feature the three remaining adult Marauders. Until then, fans can revisit the books and movies to enjoy their favorite characters.
After the Golden Trio, the Marauders are often considered the most fascinating characters in the Harry Potter books. Part of their appeal lies in the mystery surrounding their time together, and the tragedy of how their friendship ended. Each of the four – James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew – was incredibly talented in their own way, and fans have long debated which of them was the most powerful. Here’s a breakdown of how they stack up.
4. Peter Pettigrew

It’s easy to see Peter Pettigrew as a pathetic coward, especially considering his role in the Potters’ betrayal and his connection to Voldemort. However, that’s an oversimplification. Becoming an Animagus – transforming into an animal – requires incredibly difficult and skillful magic. While James and Sirius were powerful wizards, you can’t force someone without talent to achieve that level of mastery. Pettigrew’s skill was so great, he successfully maintained the form of a rat, Scabbers, for twelve years – a surprisingly long life for a common rat!
Peter Pettigrew’s biggest flaws were his cowardice and, possibly, his jealousy. He befriended the other Marauders because they were powerful and offered him protection. When Voldemort rose to power, Pettigrew instinctively gravitated towards him as a way to survive. However, he was more capable than people realize – he quickly killed Cedric Diggory and was sorted into Gryffindor, suggesting the Sorting Hat recognized some hidden potential. He famously killed twelve Muggles with a single curse, demonstrating his skill, even though he was undoubtedly the weakest of the four friends.
3. Remus Lupin

It’s tough to rank Lupin third, considering how much stronger he is than Pettigrew. Though he couldn’t become an Animagus due to his werewolf condition, Lupin was a highly talented wizard, and his time as Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher proved it. He’s often remembered for his expertise in defensive magic, particularly how well he protected and guided his students, but he was also a proficient duellist.
He fought in many significant battles and remarkably came through the clashes at the Department of Mysteries and the Astronomy Tower without a scratch. He was also put in charge of the dangerous Seven Potters mission, even with experienced Aurors like Alastor Moody and Kingsley Shacklebolt present. While his eventual death in battle is a factor, it’s worth remembering that two other highly skilled wizards, the Marauders, also died in combat.
2. James Potter

Whether James Potter was a genuinely good person is debatable – the books don’t offer enough proof to dismiss Snape’s negative view. However, it’s clear he was a very talented wizard. Being an Animagus isn’t a great indicator of character, as Peter Pettigrew proved that. Instead, we should consider his abilities more closely. Like his son Harry, James was exceptionally powerful, demonstrated by his ability to cast a powerful Patronus – a definite strength.
James Potter was a remarkably talented wizard. He was considered one of the brightest students at Hogwarts, an incredibly skilled duellist, and a fantastic flyer. Stories say he even challenged Voldemort three times, and his abilities were so impressive that Voldemort tried to recruit both him and Lily. James excelled at Transfiguration and Potions, and was such a strong duellist that he could outmatch Severus Snape, who was already a powerful wizard as a young man.
1. Sirius Black

The debate over whether James Potter or Sirius Black was more talented is a major point of discussion among Harry Potter fans, and with good reason. Both were incredibly skilled wizards and were clearly the best students at Hogwarts during their time. It’s surprising they weren’t chosen for Professor Slughorn’s exclusive Slug Club, but this was likely due to their mischievous behavior, not their grades – or perhaps because of their friendship with Remus Lupin. This shouldn’t diminish their abilities as young wizards, as they all became remarkably powerful members of the Order of the Phoenix as adults.
Sirius Black is often considered a more accomplished wizard than James Potter, largely because the books and films showcase more of his magical skills. Beyond the adventures he shared with the Marauders, Sirius became an Animagus at a young age and played a key role in creating the Marauders’ Map. He was also a highly skilled duellist, a master of Transfiguration and silent spells, and had a natural connection with magical creatures. While his Patronus wasn’t fully corporeal, he could still conjure one. Notably, Sirius defeated Dolohov, the Death Eater responsible for Lupin’s death, and likely would have beaten Bellatrix Lestrange if not for a distraction. While it’s a tight competition, Sirius’s victory feels justified given his demonstrated abilities.
