Gandalf vs. Dumbledore Fight Winner Answered by Lord of the Rings’ Ian McKellen (& He’s Absolutely Right)

As a movie buff, I always love those ‘who would win?’ debates, and the one about Albus Dumbledore versus Gandalf is a classic! Both wizards are the most powerful characters in their worlds, far beyond anyone else. We didn’t really see everything Dumbledore could do because the stories focused on Harry, but Gandalf was already incredibly powerful even before he became Gandalf the White. It’s a tough one to call, and that’s what makes it so fun to think about!

Sir Ian McKellan recently addressed the debate about who would win in a fight between wizards, responding to questions from fans in The Guardian. He initially seemed confused by the idea of a fight, but ultimately declared that Gandalf would be the victor, stating he is ‘the original wizard’.

Sir Ian McKellan is Absolutely Right (Sorry, Albus)

It’s easy to think Ian McKellan might be biased – he famously played Gandalf – but his point is spot on. The idea of a “wizard” is different in The Lord of the Rings compared to other franchises. Gandalf isn’t just someone who uses magic; he is magic. He’s a powerful, ancient being who existed since the world began and chose to appear as a guide in human form. Think of it this way: Dumbledore learns and casts spells, while Gandalf is a magical being himself.

Gandalf’s very nature gives him the edge in a fight against Dumbledore. He’s simply had more time to develop his abilities. While both wizards are incredibly powerful, Dumbledore’s magic is bound by the rules of his world. Gandalf, however, is far more flexible and instinctively knows how to use his power in any situation, making him a uniquely effective hero. This adaptability would likely prove too much for Dumbledore to overcome.

Dumbledore has one ability that Gandalf doesn’t: he can apparate, or teleport instantly. This power would have drastically changed the story of The Lord of the Rings because Dumbledore could have simply transported Frodo and Sam directly to Mordor. This is likely the only spell that would give Dumbledore a real advantage in a fight against Gandalf, allowing him to avoid attacks and strike from surprise. However, as McKellan points out, even teleportation wouldn’t guarantee victory.
