NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games just released a new trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Edition, showing off new costumes inspired by the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie. The trailer confirms that Johnny Cage, Kitana, Scorpion, and Shao Kahn will receive new looks based on how they appear in the film.
The complete version of Mortal Kombat 1, called the Definitive Edition, is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. It includes the original game, plus all previously released downloadable content – both Kombat Packs and the Khaos Reigns story expansion. This bundle also features all the Kameo fighters that were added as DLC, including Tremor, Khameleon, Janet Cage, Ferra, and Mavado.
As a huge fan, I’m so excited about all the extras you get! It includes a Jean-Claude Van Damme skin for Johnny Cage, plus a ton of Dragon Krystals – 1,250 to be exact. There’s also a Tournament Liu Kang skin, and you instantly unlock Havik, which is awesome! You get the Kameo Unlock Pack too, and Shang Tsung is a playable fighter! Oh, and they’re throwing in all the skins that were available if you pre-ordered Khaos Reigns. It’s a fantastic bundle!
These new character skins arrive a year after NetherRealm Studios stated they wouldn’t be creating any more story expansions or new characters for Mortal Kombat 1. The studio is now focusing its energy on its next big game.
NetherRealm Studios, led by Ed Boon, plans to make another Mortal Kombat game in the future. However, he couldn’t share any specifics to avoid potential issues.
Yeah, we’re absolutely working on another Mortal Kombat game! And it’s not just that – we’ve got a bunch of other stuff in the works too, not just games, but other kinds of media. We’ve got a lot of cool announcements coming soon, so stay tuned!
So, I was reading a report from May of last year, and it sounded like the studio was working on a new Injustice game – you know, the superhero fighting series. But then I started seeing more recent rumors that, while it’ll still have DC heroes, they might be ditching the Injustice name altogether. It’s a bit confusing, but sounds like they’re wanting to try something different with the same characters.
The latest installment in the Injustice series was the second game, which launched in 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Once support for that game ended, NetherRealm Studios shifted its focus to Mortal Kombat. They released Mortal Kombat 11 on PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2019, followed by Mortal Kombat 1 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in 2023.
Boon also mentioned that developing Mortal Kombat 1 allowed NetherRealm Studios to refine its game engine. He explained that, due to safety concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic, the studio chose to create one more Mortal Kombat game before considering a new Injustice title.
The new Mortal Kombat 1 has been a hit, selling 8 million copies. While successful, it hasn’t quite matched the sales of Mortal Kombat 11, which had sold 15 million copies by 2022.
