UK’s Eurovision 2026 hopeful Look Mum No Computer: “We’ve gone for a different tactic with this one”

Could this be the year the United Kingdom wins Eurovision for the first time since 1997?

Sam Battle, who performs as Look Mum No Computer, is a 37-year-old who loves building things with electronics. He’s going to Vienna with a unique approach, aiming to win top scores.

How did the opportunity to represent the UK at Eurovision come about?

About a year ago, my manager and I jokingly suggested to the BBC that we could try to compete in Eurovision, not really expecting anything to come of it. To our surprise, they encouraged us to write a song. Then, in January, we found out we’d been selected – I was completely shocked!

You’ve said before you’re a huge Eurovision fan. Has this always been a dream of yours?

I honestly didn’t expect to try, but it took a lot of effort to finish the song and gain recognition for it.

Your instruments are really one-of-a-kind – a Furby organ and a Raleigh Chopper synthesizer? That’s amazing! When did you begin building them, and what inspired you to start?

I’ve always loved creating things. When my mum was contacted by Radio 2 about my involvement with Eurovision, she shared a story about how, as a child, I immediately disassembled a toy truck instead of playing with it. Taking things apart to understand how they work, and then building new things, has always felt natural to me. I started learning guitar at twelve, and a few years later, I began combining that with my interest in building, trying to create my own musical instruments.

Do you have a favourite creation?

Your song, ‘Eins, Zwei, Drei,’ marked a first for the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest – it wasn’t sung entirely in English. Can you explain why you chose to sing in a different language?

Germany feels like a second home to me – I’ve spent a lot of time there over the years, whether working on music, connecting with people, or performing. That experience definitely influenced my work. I had the chorus for a song, but struggled to write verses that fit well with it. I even jokingly thought it would be great to have a language I could count in to calm my nerves on the Eurovision stage, and the idea just clicked.

What sets your act apart from other UK Eurovision entries?

The music has a new feel. We’ve consistently created strong pop songs, but sometimes they haven’t quite worked as well in performance. This time, we’ve taken a different approach. It’s a bit more playful and humorous than our usual style.

Do you think that will help? Does the UK need to be a bit silly when it comes to Eurovision?

Maybe. I don’t know, that’s what we’re trying. It’s not silly, but let’s see what happens.

How are you feeling ahead of the big live performance?

I’m feeling both nervous and thrilled. I have a lot on my plate! It’s a big project, and while I’ve already put in a lot of effort, there’s still much more to do. I’m even building the set myself, because it needs to accurately reflect the instruments and equipment I create.

And finally, how much do you want to win?

Winning would be great, but it’s not the most important thing. There’s a lot of talent in the competition, and I’m just focusing on enjoying the experience. I’ll give it my all, stay true to myself, and have fun no matter what happens.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 final will air from 8pm on BBC One on Saturday 16 May 2026.
