A fresh snippet from DC Studios’ upcoming Superman production offers a tense standoff between Superman (David Corenswet) and his long-time adversary, Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). In this scene, an angry Superman breaks into Luthor’s office to find out where his pet dog, Krypto, is hidden. Despite the urgency in Superman’s voice, a nonchalant Luthor sips his coffee and pretends ignorance, causing Superman to become enraged and overturn a giant table towards the window of his office. This chaotic scene is being recorded by Luthor’s girlfriend, Eve Teschmacher (Sara Sampaio), suggesting that Luthor’s actions are calculated to make Superman appear unstable and threatening in the eyes of the public. As the confrontation reaches its climax, Luthor whispers the incriminating words, “ugly dog in a cape,” hinting at his role in kidnapping Krypto and revealing his sinister motives.
In this encounter, we gain the deepest understanding so far about the relationship between the fresh Superman and Lex. Hoult brilliantly depicts Lex Luthor as a cunning manipulator who quickly discerns that Superman’s weak point is his human nature. Calm and composed, Luthor is aware that Superman would never hurt him. Instead, he exploits Superman’s compassionate emotions, transforming a simple act of love for a pet into an explosive display of unrestrained anger. The sequence may be based on Krypto’s fight with Angela Spica, aka The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría), a significant event hinted at in previous Superman previews.

The clip further explores Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman, pushing him to a deeply emotional edge, showcasing his humanity and making him more identifiable. This mirrors the film’s promotional strategy, emphasizing the authentic human side of the DC Universe’s Superman. Consequently, this new scene effectively establishes the narrative’s central conflict, while subtly hinting at the sinister nature of Lex Luthor in the DC Universe.
James Gunn’s Superman Is the Keystone of the DCU
James Gunn’s Superman kicks off the initial chapter of the freshly named DC Universe, dubbed “Gods and Monsters.” This opening act introduces viewers to a Superman who is already well-established as Clark Kent and working as a young journalist at the Daily Planet. The main storyline, as outlined by Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, revolves around Superman navigating his Kryptonian roots alongside his human upbringing. This tale aims to portray a hero who embodies “honesty, justice, and a brighter tomorrow,” highlighting his compassion and empathy. At the heart of this story is Superman’s relationship with his intelligent Daily Planet colleague, Lois Lane (played by Rachel Brosnahan), as well as his intellectual duels against Lex Luthor, the cunning and relentless CEO of LuthorCorp.
In Superman, the DC Universe is already teeming with heroes and villains right from the start, skipping the traditional origin stories. This gives the universe a sense of history and vibrancy from the get-go. Consequently, Superman isn’t just a solitary hero; he’s part of a larger community of metahumans. This community includes Nathan Fillion as the gruff Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as the avian combatant Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as the brilliant inventor Michael Holt (also known as Mister Terrific), and Anthony Carrigan portrays the shape-shifting Metamorpho.
Superman is scheduled to fly into theaters on July 11th.
