It’s been two decades since Denise Fox first appeared in EastEnders with a memorable entrance at The Queen Victoria pub.
Diane Parish delivers a powerful performance as Denise, who was incredibly angry and mistakenly believed Kevin Wicks was Grant Mitchell. Her confusion stemmed from Grant having heartlessly used her daughter, Chelsea (played by Tiana Benjamin at the time), in a brief and thoughtless relationship.
Denise is known for being fiercely protective and not afraid to speak her mind. We’ve quickly learned she’s a force to be reckoned with – whether it’s through past arguments where she didn’t hesitate to confront others, publicly calling out mistakes, or delivering a powerful rebuke that even left the usually outspoken Phil Mitchell speechless. She consistently demonstrates that you don’t want to cross her.
Denise appeared strong, but she had a hidden past. Early in her time on screen, it was revealed she’d previously escaped a violent marriage with Owen Turner (Lee Ross). When Owen found her and their daughter Libby (Belinda Owusu) in Walford, Denise cautiously allowed him back into her life, but his abusive behavior quickly resurfaced, causing further suffering for her and her family.
D faced trouble not only from Owen, but also from a shocking reunion with Chelsea’s father, Lucas Johnson (Don Gilet). Their reconnection quickly turned disastrous when Lucas kidnapped D and pretended she had died, all while he was committing several murders.

Kim, the younger sister (played by Tameka Empson), was raised primarily by Denise while their mother, Emerald (Doña Croll), enjoyed a more carefree life. This imbalance eventually caused Denise to express her resentment, feeling overwhelmed by the responsibility she carried.
She’s faced incredible hardship, including the loss of a husband, doubts about her family history, the stress of being a caregiver, a terrifying bus accident, and even difficult relationships – from a disappointing romance with Ian Beale to an unexpected pregnancy with Phil!
I was so moved by Denise’s portrayal of someone battling poverty. It wasn’t just the hardship she showed, but the way she held onto her dignity even while struggling – it felt incredibly real. Seeing her character face those basic struggles was truly heartbreaking, and it really drove home the point that anyone can find themselves in that situation. When she finally managed to rebuild her life, it was such a powerful moment – you could feel how much she’d fought for it, and it was deeply affecting.

Denise found herself at the center of a dramatic mystery on EastEnders when she hit Nish Panesar to protect Suki from an attack. She then assisted in concealing the death of Keanu Taylor, another abusive character.
The strain of keeping the secret led to Denise being diagnosed with psychosis, a challenging emotional journey that actress Parish handled with remarkable ease and skill, just as she did with all her other roles.
What really struck me watching this storyline wasn’t the drama itself, but Denise’s incredible resilience. She’s a true survivor, and it’s her quiet strength and genuine kindness that really shone through. It wasn’t just about big confrontations; some of the most powerful scenes were the smaller moments, like her stepping up for Amy Mitchell when she was struggling, or that heartbreakingly tender visit with Lola before she passed. Those moments really highlighted what a remarkable character she is.
Denise always had a way with words, and she was so kind to me, a new mom. She really showed me she cared and promised to always be there for my little girl, Lexi – Isabella Brown, as she’s known – and help look after her.

Despite facing many challenges, Denise has managed to find some happiness. She’s developed a close relationship with Patrick Trueman, who has become a father figure to her, and she married Jack Branning. Her relationship with Jack was tested during the show’s 40th anniversary, but viewers ultimately voted for her to stay with him instead of pursuing a relationship with Ravi Gulati.
Since then, D’ has mostly lived a peaceful life. While family drama unfolded around her, she remained a supportive figure – she was there when Penny announced her pregnancy, gently welcomed Patrick’s grandson Josh into the family, and continued to run her salon.
Denise started feeling unwell with symptoms like tiredness, which worried those around her. Surprisingly, her former rival, Sam Mitchell, has been a source of support, encouraging Denise to see a doctor.
At first, I thought the character’s struggles were simply due to low iron. But as the story unfolds, it becomes heartbreakingly clear that she’s facing something much more serious – a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia, a particularly aggressive type of blood cancer. It really shifts the emotional weight of the film.

Although it’s tough to put Denise through another difficult challenge, Parish has consistently delivered powerful performances and is deeply committed to portraying her character as the strong warrior fans adore. This makes her perfectly suited to handle this storyline.
After playing Denise Fox on EastEnders for many years, the actress is tackling a completely new storyline. According to EastEnders’ executive producer, Ben Wadey, the show’s writers wanted to challenge the character and delve deeper into who Denise is after two decades on the show. They hope this story will allow viewers to really understand her.
The earlier flashforward gave us confidence that Denise would still be alive on New Year’s Day 2027, and Wade’s recent comments suggest she’ll continue to be a central character. Even with everything happening, I believe she’ll remain strong and provide viewers with a sense of hope.

Denise has overcome difficult challenges like dealing with people who mistreated her, a personal mental health struggle, and living with the frustrating Ian, so she’s definitely not going to give up now.
Look, facing cancer is undeniably the hardest thing Denise has ever gone through. But honestly, it just proves what many of us already suspected: her greatest strength, her lasting impact, will always be her incredible ability to bounce back. It really highlights her resilience, and that’s what I’ll always remember about her.
