Transformers toys are highly sought-after collectibles, and for good reason. The franchise started with the toys themselves, then became a beloved cartoon and later a hugely successful movie series. There have been nine Transformers movies released so far, with styles ranging from the action-packed films directed by Michael Bay to the more character-focused ‘Bumblebee’. However, many fans still consider the original animated series and the very first movie to be the most appealing parts of the franchise.
This helps explain why a vintage Transformers set sold for over $20,625 in 2025. It was the 1985 Devastator set, and collectors highly prize it because it was the first time the toys featured robots combining into one larger figure. Six robots – Scrapper, Hook, Bonecrusher, Long Haul, Mixmaster, and Scavenger – joined together to form Devastator, establishing the idea of “combiners” that would be used in future Transformers lines.
The 1985 Devastator is a Holy Grail for Transformers Fans

Devastator was a hugely popular toy in the 1980s, playing a central role in many classic Transformers stories and even appearing in the Marvel comics. He was the first of a type of combined robot, paving the way for others like Superior and Predaking. However, complete, unopened Devastator sets are incredibly rare because most kids opened them up to play with the individual robots. In fact, many children purchased the individual Constructicon robots separately, as the complete gift set was quite expensive.
The Devastator set sold at auction in 2025 fetched a particularly high price, especially considering its official AFA grade of 80+ Near Mint with excellent component grades. While lower-condition sets still sell for thousands of dollars, another set sold later that year for $3,422.40, despite having scratches on the box. Collectors have observed that prices can increase dramatically when just a few enthusiastic Transformers fans compete against each other in an auction.
As a huge Transformers fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the combiners – those teams that combine into one massive robot! The really good vintage ones, like Predaking, can be seriously valuable, fetching a lot of money. While you don’t often see them with all five members intact, a pristine, unopened Bruticus or Menasor set can go for thousands! Computron is also super sought after because fewer of them were made. But for me, Devastator will always be king. He was the first combiner, and he basically set the standard for everything that followed. It’s no surprise he’s still popular today – he even showed up in the Michael Bay movies, which is awesome!
