Amazon’s Fourth Wing Series Officially Confirmed For Prime Video

The Fourth Wing series is officially taking flight on Prime Video.

Rebecca Yarros’s The Empyrean series quickly became popular on BookTok, blending romance and fantasy. In 2023, the year the first book was released and became a bestseller, Amazon MGM Studios bought the rights to adapt it for television. Production is being handled with Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society. While Moira Walley-Beckett was initially set to lead the project as showrunner, Meredith Averill, who co-created Locke & Key, has since taken over that role.

Prime Video has officially ordered a full series based on Fourth Wing. Author Rebecca Yarros shared the news live at Amazon’s presentation, alongside Lisa Joy, who will direct the first episode and serve as an executive producer. Yarros emphasized the importance of finding the perfect creative lead for the adaptation. Author Emily Averill also joined the presentation, highlighting the strength of the original story.

Rebecca’s books have quickly become incredibly popular this century, building a dedicated fanbase that truly immerses itself in the stories. This is largely thanks to ‘Fourth Wing,’ which masterfully blends high-stakes emotion, exciting battles, and compelling power struggles with plenty of humor, heart, and a captivating romance.

So far, three books in the Empyrean series have been released, including Iron Flame (2023) and Onyx Storm (2025), with a total of five planned. The series follows Violet Sorrengail, a twenty-year-old who reluctantly enters Basgiath War College to train as a dragon rider, embarking on a journey of danger and romance. Prime Video intends to create a season of television for each book in the series.

Prime Video is adding another big fantasy series with Fourth Wing, following their previous ventures into the genre like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time. Season 3 of The Rings of Power will be available November 11th, and the show is still planned to run for five seasons. However, The Wheel of Time has been canceled after three seasons.

Unlike some other recent fantasy adaptations, the TV series based on Fourth Wing is starting with books that are still being published. While comparisons to big-budget fantasy shows are expected, there’s also worry it might be canceled before the story is finished, similar to what happened with The Wheel of Time.
