Akylas Mytilinaios became popular during the pandemic by posting ukulele song covers on TikTok. He followed this up with his first original song, “Fthinókraso,” later that year.

The Greek singer first appeared on The Voice Greece in 2022. They became even more popular in 2024 with the release of their successful single, Atelié.

Earlier this year, Akylas competed in Sing for Greece, hoping to earn the opportunity to represent Greece at Eurovision. He won the competition with his song, “Ferto.”

Akylas will compete in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest with his original song, “Ferto.” He wrote the song with collaborators Orfeas Nonis, Theofilos Pouzbouris, and Thomas Papathanasis.

The Eurovision Song Contest has received a lot of criticism for letting Israel compete this year, given the current war happening in Gaza.

Several countries are choosing not to participate in the contest this year because the organization in charge, the European Broadcasting Union, decided against banning Israel from competing.

As a huge Eurovision fan, I was really interested in the decisions made at the EBU’s meeting last December. They voted to put some rules in place to prevent governments or outside groups from unfairly pushing certain songs to sway how people vote – which is a good thing, honestly! However, they didn’t actually have a vote about whether Israel would be allowed to participate next year. It was just… not discussed, as far as I understand.

As a huge Eurovision fan, I was really pleased to hear the EBU’s announcement! Basically, they’ve confirmed that the 2026 contest is still a go, and most of the members agreed they didn’t need another vote on whether or not to hold it. They’re just adding some extra safety measures to make sure everything runs smoothly. It’s great news for all of us who love the show!

After that announcement, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Iceland all stated they would not be competing in Eurovision this year.

Ireland’s public broadcaster, RTÉ, has decided not to participate in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, citing the ongoing and devastating loss of life and humanitarian crisis in Gaza. They believe it would be inappropriate to participate while civilians continue to be at risk.

The BBC, the UK broadcaster of the competition, stated it backs the EBU’s decision. In a statement, they explained that it’s about following the rules and ensuring the event is inclusive for everyone.
