Last week in Pokemon Go felt a little quiet on purpose. Niantic introduced “Evergreen Week” research tasks, which add challenges during slower periods. While there was the Lechonk Community Day and some smaller events, this week promises more excitement for those hoping to catch new Pokemon and Shiny versions. Starting May 12th, Pokemon Go is holding its Spring Marathon event, bringing a boost for both Shiny hunters and fans of Pokemon from the Paldea region after a few calmer weeks.
From May 12th at 10 AM to May 18th at 8 PM local time, Pokemon Go is hosting a Spring Marathon event! The event introduces two new Pokemon from the Paldea region, along with a new Pikachu wearing a special costume. True to its name, the event focuses on hatching eggs – you’ll have a chance to hatch costumed Pokemon and the new debut Pokemon from 5KM eggs. Here’s a guide to help you get the most out of the Pokemon Go Spring Marathon event.
How to Get Flittle and Espathra in Pokemon Go

Flittle and Espathra have arrived in Pokémon Go with the start of the Spring Marathon event on May 12th. Unlike some recent Pokémon, you won’t find Flittle appearing naturally in the wild. Instead, trainers have two main ways to catch Flittle and evolve it into Espathra.
During the Spring Marathon event, you’ll be able to hatch Flittle from 5KM eggs. From May 12th to May 18th, make sure to collect plenty of 5KM eggs from PokeStops and Gyms to improve your chances of finding one!
During the Spring Marathon, players can complete a special GO Pass to earn rewards. Flittle will be available as a reward through both the free and paid tracks of this GO Pass. As you progress through the event and level up your pass, you’ll have a chance to get Flittle.
To obtain Espathra in Pokémon Go, you must evolve a Flittle by using 50 Flittle Candy. If you’re trying to complete your Pokédex, you’ll need to catch several Flittle to get both Pokémon.
All Special 5 KM Egg Spawns During the Spring Marathon Event

While Flittle and Espathra are the main attraction, the Spring Marathon event also gives players a chance to find special, Shiny versions of several Pokemon dressed up for the occasion. Keep an eye out for the new Pikachu wearing a marathon visor – it’ll appear in the wild and can be Shiny from the start! You can also earn this Pikachu by completing the free Timed Research during the Spring Marathon event.
Besides the chance to hatch a Shiny Pikachu wearing a marathon visor, several other Pokémon will be available in 5KM eggs during the event. All of these Pokémon can be Shiny, except for Flittle, which is appearing for the first time.

If you’re hoping to find Shiny Pokémon or catch the newly released Pokémon from the Paldea region, focus on hatching 5KM eggs during this event – they’re your best bet! The GO Pass, Field Research, and Timed Research tasks will also offer some great opportunities. For complete details about the Pokémon GO Spring Marathon event, see the official Niantic blog post.
