*Warning: Spoilers ahead for Devil May Cry season 2.*
The anime series Devil May Cry has returned to Netflix, and fans who binge-watched the second season all at once might be feeling a little sad that it’s over.
Since the first two seasons were released only a year apart, we can expect new episodes to appear on streaming services relatively quickly – even though we’re still waiting to hear if the show has been renewed.
They really need to make another season of Devil May Cry, as the first one finishes with a lot of unanswered questions about the future of the popular demon hunter.
How did things reach this point? As the second season ends, brothers Dante and Vergil are working together to overcome Argosax, a powerful demon resembling a god.
Vergil created a gateway to the demon world, intending to banish a monster through it. However, he unexpectedly stepped through himself, and Dante quickly followed, just before the gateway sealed shut.
Here’s how Devil May Cry season 2 ends and sets up a very likely third season.
Devil May Cry season 2 ending explained: How do Dante and Vergil defeat Argosax?
Simply put, Mundus doesn’t let Dante fight Argosax alone. When Dante arrives in Makai, Mundus intervenes and decides to battle the demon himself.
Mundus states, ‘I wanted you to be reborn, but now I’ll make sure absolutely nothing of you is left – not even a memory.’
Mundus actually stole the throne from Argosax a long time ago, which is why these powerful, god-like demons have been enemies for so long.

As Vergil and Dante battle, they’re also working to minimize the destruction and disconnect a powerful amulet from their father’s sword. Their goal is to break down the barrier separating different worlds.
Mundus finally overcomes Argosax, decapitating him and tossing the head towards Dante and Vergil. Then, other demons serving Mundus arrive to prevent the brothers from taking the sword.
Did Sparda really betray Mundus?
Mundus attempts to appeal to Vergil, claiming he always acted in his best interest. He justifies killing Vergil’s mother and his harsh training as essential steps to eliminate any human frailty.
That’s when Mundus reveals the truth about Sparda, the boy’s demonic father. Contrary to popular belief, Sparda wasn’t a hero who saved humanity. Instead, Mundus was the one who actually betrayed him – the opposite of what everyone thought.
That’s when Mundus explained how he defeated Argosax, with Sparda’s assistance. Sparda believed in bringing order, not the chaos of the past, and together they created a Makai worthy of its reputation.

As Mundus became increasingly paranoid and suspected enemies at every turn, even among his own followers, Sparda sided against him, understanding that Mundus was no longer capable of leading.
They fought across the realms of Makai, unable to defeat each other, until Sparda realized a way to end the conflict: forcibly suppressing my desires.
Dante’s upset because this new information implies his father imprisoned Mundus not to protect humanity, but for his own selfish reasons. It’s starting to look like his father wasn’t the hero everyone believed him to be.
Why does Vergil fight Dante?
After Dante resists Mundus, the demon king intensifies his efforts, summoning Vergil to Earth and inviting him to rule humanity together.
Vergil declines, and so Dante and he battle their way to Sparda’s sword, the weapon needed to end the conflict.
When they reached the sword, Dante reasonably suggested they seal the barrier for now and return to deal with Mundus later, when they were better prepared. He told Vergil he couldn’t risk losing him again, especially after just being reunited.

However, his brother refuses to share the power, wanting to rule Makai on his own, without Mundus. Dante’s disappointed by this, and a fight breaks out between them.
Memories of the brothers’ childhood training sessions highlight how equally skilled they are and how fiercely they’ve competed for years. However, the scene takes a shocking turn when Vergil unexpectedly defeats Dante in combat.
How do they defeat Mundus?
Despite the difficult situation, Vergil considers a ‘what if’ scenario. He muses about how things could have been different if he and Dante had simply switched rooms on the night their mother passed away, wondering if they might have ended up living each other’s lives.
Vergil sends Dante flying upwards with a powerful blow, launching him towards the portal above. He follows by throwing a gem at Dante, who catches it mid-air and uses it to seal the portal shut behind him.
Once Mundus understood what Dante had done, he flew after him, but couldn’t reach him in time. The portal slammed shut, leaving Mundus stranded in the demon world, Makai, while Dante returned safely to Earth.
This isn’t the selfless act of bravery you might think it is though.
Vergil acknowledges Mundus’s assessment of humanity, saying, ‘You were right about humans. I appreciate you removing their influence from me.’ However, he immediately adds, ‘But you made a mistake when you killed my mother.’
It seems Vergil and Mundus won’t be teaming up again in the foreseeable future. However, Vergil isn’t interested in joining the heroes either.
“Makai will invade Earth with me as their king,” declares Vergil.
Mundus says, “You take after your father more than you realize.” He then challenges, “Let’s see if you can do better than he did.”
Guess we have a new Big Bad on our hands, and it’s none other than Dante’s own brother, Vergil.
What happens to Lady at the end?
Lady, played by Scout Taylor-Compton, hadn’t been seen during the finale, but she reappears at the very end to cope with the fallout from the previous episode’s major fight.
Speaking directly to Dante, Lady shares a painful memory: she witnessed her own mother’s murder as a child. She tells him, “I was just a helpless kid, like you are now.”
At first, she didn’t know what created their connection, but now she understands why they clicked so well. However, unlike Dante, Lady refuses to just ignore the pain from her past. She’s determined to confront it directly.
You proved to me that family isn’t about shared blood, but the decisions we make. You represent the very best in people, Dante. I belong with those who are at their worst.

We’re with Lady as she’s forced to watch a video showing the man transforming into the terrifying Jester demon – the same one she battled earlier this season.
With Lady leaving to handle personal matters, the episode concludes with Dante left reeling from his own troubles, still stranded on the street where he arrived through the portal.
I remember Dante talking about happier times, before everything fell apart. He once told Vergil, “Don’t worry, we’ll be together forever.” But after what happened, after Vergil’s betrayal, that doesn’t seem likely anymore.
When Dante breaks down, the amulet splits into two pieces – one red, one blue. It’s a pretty obvious sign that their bond is broken, and it hints at a seriously dramatic third season.
Devil May Cry is available to stream on Netflix now.
