Devil May Cry: How Netflix’s Second Season Finale Sets Up Season 3

The popular video game series Devil May Cry is back for a second season on Netflix. The story picks up with Dante, the demon hunter, after he was captured and pulled into the demon world of Makai. This season takes a surprising turn by focusing not only on Dante, but also on his complicated brother, Vergil. Though Netflix hasn’t announced a third season yet, the season two finale hints at what’s to come for the Devil May Cry universe.

Please be aware that the following contains major spoilers for season two of the Netflix series Devil May Cry. While Vergil has a bigger role this season, a new villain, Arius, has been introduced. Arius, who originally appeared in the second Devil May Cry game, leads the organization Oroborus and is trying to unleash the powerful Argosax. When faced with a threat that could destroy the world, Dante and Vergil defeat Arius by sending him to Mundus’ realm. However, this victory doesn’t resolve all the conflicts.

In the season finale, Vergil fights Mundus and discovers the truth about his mother’s death, ultimately sending Dante back to Earth. The finale suggests a massive upcoming battle between Mundus and his former student. Dante returns with two pieces of the broken “Perfect Amulet,” which was originally split between him and Vergil, the sons of Sparda. If Devil May Cry gets another season, fans can anticipate seeing Dante and Vergil at very different points in their lives, as established by the finale.

Jester Maxxing

The second season of the Devil May Cry animated series introduced Jester, a memorable demonic clown character who’s been a key part of the Devil May Cry video games. He appears as a servant to the villain Mundus, but throughout the Netflix season, he’s seemingly been manipulating events from all sides, with the finale suggesting a larger role to come. Jester originally appeared in Devil May Cry 3, considered by many fans to be one of the best games in the series, and his history was first explored in the show’s first season.

In a shocking reveal at the end of the season, Lady Arkham discovered that Jester is her father. Driven by this knowledge and the desire to avenge her mother’s death, she’s now embarking on a quest for revenge, which will likely be the central focus of her story next season. While Lady and Dante grew closer in season two and developed strong feelings for each other, her new, independent path could strain their relationship. Although Earth has been saved from Arius and Mundus, the consequences of the war between Earth and Makai will continue to impact both sides.

While Netflix hasn’t officially announced a third season of Devil May Cry, there’s still potential for more content. Many characters from the video games haven’t appeared in the show yet, including Nero, the main character in Devil May Cry 4 and Devil May Cry 5, as well as supporting characters like Trish and V. If the show continues, we can expect to see new heroes and villains introduced. Given that showrunner Adi Shankar’s previous series, Castlevania, went beyond its initial two seasons, there’s a good chance Devil May Cry could do the same.
