‘PS5 Is Just a Plastic Box if It Doesn’t Have Content’: Sony Explains Its ‘Third-Party Focused’ Ecosystem

Sony’s PlayStation consoles, including the PS5, have always had great exclusive games, but creating these games hasn’t been as central to their success compared to Nintendo.

The Switch 2 is sold on the strength of Mario and Pokémon; PS5 is all about GTA and Call of Duty.

The company has publicly discussed this in an interview with The Game Business. However, Christian Svensson, who leads PlayStation’s second and third-party relations, is primarily concentrating on a key aspect of their overall system.

Describing PlayStation as “very third-party focused”, he explained:

According to PlayStation CEO Nishino, the PlayStation console itself is nothing without the games that run on it. Since most of those games come from third-party developers, supporting them is essential for continued growth. We believe it’s our responsibility as a leader in the gaming industry to be ambitious, embrace new developers, and help the entire industry thrive – not just focus on our own success. If we stop prioritizing that, the whole industry will suffer.

Svensson explained that developing games directly allows them to showcase the highest quality of experience possible on their hardware, setting a standard for their partners to follow. They regularly demonstrate this content to partners to give them an idea of what top-tier gameplay looks like.

On the topic of first-party influencing third-party he added:

We’re currently developing some new features internally, and we plan to gradually make them available to our partners. However, most of the time, we create tools for our partners that we then also use ourselves. Our teams are working on a couple of exciting projects that will be industry-leading, but we’ll share more details about those next year.

So interesting stuff, then – and even an enticing tease.

We’re curious about what these programs involve. It likely won’t directly impact consumers in a noticeable way, but a robust development environment is always good for the company overall.

It’s always seemed clear that PlayStation relies heavily on games made by developers other than themselves.

Look, games like God of War and The Last of Us have gotten huge lately, but if I’m being honest, PlayStation still moves consoles because of games like EA Sports FC and Resident Evil. Let’s be real, third-party titles have always been the biggest draw for PlayStation, and they probably always will be.

The big question is how will it maintain its advantage.

As a gamer, I’m starting to see a lot more options besides PlayStation. With PCs getting more powerful and the Switch 2 on the way, Sony’s really going to have to work hard to keep those big third-party games coming to the PS5 – and make sure the PS6 is the place to play them too. It’s not a given anymore!

The company reportedly landed a marketing partnership with GTA 6, which should give sales a boost this holiday season. However, Sony still needs to keep innovating and working hard to maintain its success.
