Firevolt, the team behind WheelMates, is creating Kingfish, a cooperative game for two players. In Kingfish, you’ll work together to build and protect a kingdom that’s located on the back of a massive, ancient sea creature. The game is a roguelite, meaning each playthrough will be different, and it’s planned for release on PC via Steam and unspecified consoles in 2027.
According to FireVolt, their new game, ‘The King and Fish,’ features a unique dynamic where players cooperate despite seeing the same situation very differently, because each has limited information. They aim to offer a new approach to city-building games by combining elements of real-time strategy, third-person action, and asymmetric cooperative gameplay.

Here is an overview of the game, via Firevolt:
Kingfish is a cooperative game for two players where you build and protect a kingdom located on the back of a giant, ancient sea creature. It’s a ‘roguelite,’ meaning it has challenging, replayable levels with some permanent progression.
In a world dominated by a monster-filled ocean, you’ll take on one of two roles. You can play as the colossal fish that is the land itself, overseeing your kingdom from above. This means managing resources, constructing buildings, and assisting in battles. Or, you can play as the young King, exploring and fighting enemies directly on the back of this giant creature, gathering everything you need to survive in real-time.
For King and Fish to thrive, they need to work together and fulfill their specific duties. As King, you’ll oversee the daily lives of the villagers living on the giant fish, making sure everyone is happy and their needs are met. Keeping morale high will create a strong defense force, allowing you to effectively respond to any incoming attacks.
Alternatively, play as the insightful Fish, focusing on the overall strategy. This means watching out for threats in the ocean, managing resources, and planning the city’s growth. You’ll also be responsible for directing workers to achieve production targets, warning the King about incoming enemies at night, and aiding in battles with powerful magic.
Help the growing civilization on the ancient leviathan thrive by sharing vital information about dangers, valuable resources, and important strategies. Fulfill the royal family’s legacy and secure a peaceful future for all!
Every time you start a new game, you’ll get a fresh city to create, complete with new people, buildings, and treasures to find. You’ll also get to continue playing with villagers you’ve known before, who give King and Fish special bonuses.
