The Illuminati became a significant group in Marvel Comics, though not in the way they intended. It began with the Kree-Skrull War, which opened Iron Man’s eyes to the vast threats facing the universe. He believed someone needed to proactively address these dangers, so he brought together key leaders – Mr. Fantastic, Namor, Black Bolt, Doctor Strange, Professor X, and Black Panther – and proposed a secret council. This group would make difficult, world-saving decisions without public knowledge, preventing long-term catastrophes. Black Panther didn’t participate, but with the others on board, the Illuminati was formed.
Twenty years ago, the Illuminati quickly became a major power in the Marvel Universe. Their decisions had far-reaching consequences, often with devastating results. Here are seven of the biggest ways the Illuminati altered the Marvel Universe, sometimes leading to catastrophic events.
7) The Maker and the Birth of the New Ultimate Universe

The Maker, originally a brilliant Reed Richards from the old Ultimate Universe, proved to be its greatest villain. In the Ultimate Invasion storyline, he attempted to build a new universe completely under his control. The Illuminati, a team of heroes who hadn’t worked together in years, tried to stop him but were utterly defeated – demonstrating their usual lack of effectiveness. As a result, the Maker successfully created a new Ultimate Universe and continued to pursue his sinister goals.
6) The Rise of God Emperor Doom

The Illuminati faced an early challenge in Latveria, successfully keeping Doctor Doom in the dark about their activities. This only fueled his suspicion, leading him to uncover the situation himself and devise a unique solution. A brilliant scientist and strategist, Doom formulated a plan the Illuminati hadn’t considered – weaponizing the Molecule Man. This allowed him to steal the power of the Beyonders and transform himself into God Emperor Doom.
5) The Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda

Black Panther has never had a comfortable relationship with the Illuminati. He initially refused to join their original lineup, and only joined a later version when a major crisis forced his hand and dashed his dreams of space exploration. Following the events of Secret Wars, Wakanda achieved its goal of reaching the stars and building a galactic empire. A key reason for this was Panther’s distrust of the Illuminati; he believed they wouldn’t prioritize Wakanda’s best interests and wanted to allow his people to thrive independently of secretive and potentially misguided organizations.
4) Splitting the Infinity Stones

The Infinity Stones are incredibly powerful and dangerous objects in the Marvel Universe, and the Illuminati knew they needed to be dealt with. After Adam Warlock broke apart the Gauntlet (following orders from the Living Tribunal in Warlock and the Infinity Watch) but before the villain known as the Hood tried to obtain it (in Avengers Vol. 4), the Illuminati gathered the Stones – which were originally called Gems. The power proved too great for Reed Richards, who initially proposed the idea, so the group decided to split the Stones amongst themselves for safekeeping.
3) “Planet Hulk” and World War Hulk

The Hulk is incredibly powerful – a huge asset when he’s friendly, but a major problem when he isolates himself and starts causing destruction. Originally, the plan was to send him to a peaceful planet, but a strange spatial event transported him to Sakaar instead. This led to the story “Planet Hulk,” where he liberated the planet, found love, married, and became its ruler, only for it to be destroyed by an explosion caused by his ship. Blaming the Illuminati for this disaster, he retaliated by attacking Earth with the remaining inhabitants in World War Hulk. The Illuminati’s poor planning – failing to thoroughly check the ship’s trajectory, for example – once again had disastrous consequences, this time provoking the one being you absolutely don’t want to make angry.
2) The Incursions

The Incursions – the sudden appearance of alternate Earths – were a completely new crisis. A new version of the Illuminati formed, including Black Panther, Beast (replacing the deceased Professor X), and Captain America, and they managed to stop the first Incursion. However, Captain America disagreed with their secretive and often ruthless approach, so the Illuminati mindwiped him. This led them to continue working in secret, even though they could have sought help from any hero or villain. Ultimately, their secretive methods backfired and caused even bigger problems.
1) Secret Invasion

As a huge Marvel fan, I have to say Secret Invasion was a wild ride, but honestly, it all comes down to the Illuminati messing up big time. They decided to go straight to the Skrull homeworld to try and scare them off, thinking they could just strong-arm an entire intergalactic empire with, like, six guys! Predictably, it didn’t go well – they were captured and experimented on, barely escaped, and really ticked off the Skrull Emperor in the process. That anger eventually fueled Veranke’s plan to invade Earth. Seriously, if those guys had just come up with a decent plan before poking the bear, the whole invasion could have been avoided. It’s frustrating because it felt so preventable!
