Insomnia – 4K UHD / BLU-RAY LIMITED EDITION

Christopher Nolan’s 2002 film, ‘Insomnia’, often gets overlooked. It came out between the critically acclaimed ‘Memento’ and the start of his big-budget successes with ‘Batman Begins’. While it starred Al Pacino as a police officer, the casting of Robin Williams as a murder suspect was particularly noteworthy, as it was a much darker role than he usually played. Many viewers didn’t realize that this Hollywood film was actually a remake of a Norwegian movie with the same title.

Insomnia…..

The story opens with the murder of 17-year-old Tanja Lorentzen in Tromsø, Norway. Two detectives, Jonas Engström and Erik Vik, are assigned to the case. Jonas, a former Swedish officer with a troubled past – he had a relationship with a witness and relocated to Norway – and Erik begin the investigation. When their initial attempt to arrest a suspect fails – the suspect escapes and Jonas accidentally shoots Erik, then falsely claims the fugitive was responsible – Jonas is consumed by guilt. Under the constant daylight of the Arctic summer and plagued by insomnia, he spirals into a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with the real killer, losing his grasp on what’s real.

Behind the scenes….

Erik Sklodbjaerg’s first feature film is a disturbing and atmospheric thriller, largely due to Alexander Skarsgård’s compelling performance as a troubled detective and the unique Nordic setting of perpetual daylight. Originally intended for a Norwegian actor, the role was rewritten for Skarsgård as Swedish—a choice many believe improved the character compared to Al Pacino’s portrayal in the remake. Sklodbjaerg had previously been offered the chance to direct the remake but declined, having spent time in Hollywood directing the unsuccessful 2001 film, ‘Prozac Nation,’ before returning to his native country.

Skarsgard’s character is intentionally complex and morally gray, which benefits the film. However, some of the action sequences aren’t as strong – notably, a memorable chase scene from another film involving a fall into a lake is missing. This film was one of Skarsgard’s last before he moved to Hollywood, where he’s since appeared in a wide range of movies like ‘Deep Blue Sea,’ ‘Exorcist: The Beginning,’ ‘Thor,’ and ‘Mamma Mia.’

The film’s commentary is particularly good, offering a look behind the scenes, though it can be a bit overly enthusiastic at times. It’s also interesting to watch the earlier short films by director Erik Skjoldbjærg to see how his filmmaking style evolved.

Insomnia was created during the rise in popularity of dark, Nordic crime dramas, like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. If you enjoy Scandi-noir, this is a film you won’t want to miss.
