Anyone who knows my wife knows she would never leave on her own. She was clearly abducted.
On November 6, 2016, Keith Papini spoke with Good Morning America four days after his wife, Sherri Papini, disappeared while jogging. He became concerned when she didnāt pick up their children ā 4-year-old Tyler and 2-year-old Violet ā from daycare.
Keith pointed out that while she might misplace her phone, she would always be reliable when it came to picking up their kids at the usual time.
The disappearance of a 34-year-old woman in Redding, California, rapidly gained national attention. The case, involving a woman her sister-in-law, Suzanne Papini, called a “supermom,” quickly became a popular topic for true crime media.
Sherri Papini’s strange choice to pretend she was kidnapped ā a decision that led to the end of her marriage ā has been covered extensively. The 2023 Lifetime movie Hoax: The Kidnapping of Sherri Papini, starring Jaime King, dramatizes the story and is now available on Netflix.
As Keith pointed out in the 2024 Hulu documentary Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini, there’s been plenty of time for consideration and thought.
Looking back on everything really made me face issues Iād been avoiding for a long time,” Keith shared in the series, which was the first time heād spoken openly about his wifeās absence and their life afterward. “It helped me understand how everything fit together.
In the 2025 ID series Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie, Sherri Papini insisted people had a completely incorrect understanding of her.
I’ll never forget 2016. When she vanished, it was like the world stopped. Everyone was desperately searching for her, and a huge $50,000 reward was offered ā anything, anything to find out where she was. It was terrifying, and I was glued to every update, hoping for good news. I just had to know she was okay.
Keith stated he received a text from his wife at 10:37 a.m. on Wednesday, November 2nd, asking if he planned to come home for lunch. However, she later clarified to police that she didn’t necessarily mean a midday meal. Because he didn’t have his personal phone with him at work, he didn’t reply until 1:39 p.m.

Keith wondered, as he thought back in The Perfect Wife, “If I’d just been home for lunch that day… would things be different now?”
Keith came home to an empty house and discovered his kids hadn’t been collected as usual. “Normally, I’d open the door and my family would rush in to hug me,” he explained to KRCR-TV. He then used a phone-finding app to locate Sherri’s cell phone.
He discovered her phone and earbuds near the corner of Old Oregon Trail and Sunrise Drive, roughly a mile from home. A few strands of her blonde hair were caught in the earbud wires.

What happened during the search forĀ Sherri Papini?
Rescue crews searched the surrounding woods and trails, while police reviewed security camera footage from nearby stores. Meanwhile, Keith, Tyler, and Violet received an outpouring of support as loved ones traveled from all directions to offer assistance.
Sherri’s sister, Sheila Koester, told ABC News that her family loves her and they are pleading for her safe return home.
As expected, the internet quickly filled with theories about what happened, with many people suspecting Keith or believing Sherri had run away from her family. Online forums dedicated to true crime, like Reddit, became hubs for these ideas. Within just a few days, the authorities received over 200 leads from the public.
On November 8th, Rod Rodriguez III, a family member, posted on the Facebook page Redding Crime 2.0 to address rumors circulating about Sherri and Keith. He stated that untrue and hurtful claims were being made online and confirmed that Sherri’s husband had been fully cooperative with the investigation, also clarifying that Keith had not hired an attorney.
Regarding the false rumors about Keith, those who know him and Sherri understand how loving and devoted they are to their family, and know he had no involvement in her disappearance, Rodriguez stated, according to the LA Times. This is why so many family and friends spent last weekend searching for her ā one family even rented helicopters, a couple cut their vacation short and flew home from across the Atlantic, and another traveled from Idaho to help.

Detectives explored whether Keith might be involved in Sherri’s disappearance, as romantic partners are often the first people investigators consider. However, he passed a polygraph test and his alibi was confirmed, satisfying the investigators.
According to a polygraph test, the husband is not believed to be involved in his wifeās disappearance, according to Lieutenant Anthony Bertain of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives have also verified his location on the day she went missing, and currently, thereās no physical evidence linking him to the case.
Detective are still working to figure out if she left on her own or if something forced her disappearance, Bertain stated.

I was glued to the “Help Find Sherri Papini” Facebook page ā it was the place to get any news at all. And honestly, everyone was so desperate to help, a GoFundMe called “Bring Sherri Home Safe” quickly raised over $49,000 for the search! It was amazing to see so many people pitching in, hoping for her safe return. I checked it constantly, praying for updates.
Keith expressed his gratitude for everyone’s donations on November 7th, saying the Papini family deeply appreciates all the support, kindness, and prayers they’ve received.
When was Sherri Papini found?
On November 24, 2016, around 4:30 a.m., several drivers called 911 to report a woman near Interstate 5 in Yolo County. One truck driver even stopped and waited for the California Highway Patrol to arrive. The woman turned out to be Sherri, who had been missing for 22 days and was found 146 miles from her home.
She had a messy haircut, bruises all over her body, and a chain connected to her wrist and waist, as if she’d been restrained.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m always moved by stories of families reconnecting, and this one is particularly heartwarming. Sherri and Keith were recently reunited at Woodland Hospital, and honestly, reading their statement brought tears to my eyes. They shared that they’re absolutely overjoyed by the incredible support they’ve received, helping them rebuild their family. Itās so wonderful to hear that, especially around Thanksgiving, everyoneās hard work has brought them back together and given them the time they need to heal. Itās a beautiful reminder of the power of community and the importance of family.
Sheriff Tom Bosenko of Shasta County announced to the press that Sherri Papini had been found and safely returned to her family on Thanksgiving Day.
He emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages, stating, “It’s actually just beginning a new phase.”
The sheriff stated there was confidential information he couldn’t reveal at this time, but confirmed that Sherri was freed by her abductor on a country road close to Interstate 5. She had been tied up, but managed to get the attention of a driver who helped her.
Based on Sherri’s description, police are looking for two Hispanic women in a dark SUV, believed to be armed. Detectives are committed to finding those responsible for her abduction and bringing them to justice.
Several days after the initial reports, Bosenko stated on November 27th that they had no reason to doubt Sherri Papiniās account of what happened. She reported being attacked and received medical care for her injuries.
Investigators had obtained at least 20 warrants for cell phone records and security camera footage from Redding and Yolo County as they continued searching for the two armed women.
But patience is a virtue the Internet does not possess.

On November 29, 2016, Keith released a statement to Good Morning America expressing gratitude for the worldwide support his family received during what he described as a very difficult time. He specifically thanked many people and organizations for their help.
He described the attention his family received as a mixed blessing, saying the rumors, false accusations, and negativity had been draining and upsetting. He affirmed they wouldn’t let it diminish their joy at having their daughter safely home. He acknowledged the publicās desire for confirmation that the situation was genuine and not a hoax for attention or financial gain, but stated he wouldn’t waste time responding to each baseless claim.

When Keith first saw Sherri in the hospital, she was severely injured. Her face was covered in bruises of different colors, and her nose was broken. She weighed only 87 pounds and had bruises, burns, rashes, and marks from chains all over her body. Her long blond hair had been cut short. Keith could feel raised scabs where sheād been branded. Sheād been thrown from a moving vehicle while chained around the waist and wrists, with a bag over her head. She eventually managed to free one hand and used the bag to signal for help.
Sherri experienced a truly awful ordeal, and the images people might have in their minds don’t even come close to how bad it actually was. He requested privacy, saying they have a difficult journey of recovery ahead.
In his book, The Perfect Wife, Keith described the shock of seeing his wife in the hospital for the first time after she was found. He said her gaze made him feel as though she wasn’t being truthful with him.
However, he explained that once he truly examined her injuries, any hesitation he felt vanished immediately.
What was Sherri Papini’s kidnapping story?
According to a 55-page sworn statement filed in court on March 3rd and reviewed by TopMob News, Sherri shared the following account with investigators in the days after she came back, and again over the following months and years:
On November 2, 2016, while she was running, two women in a dark SUV pulled up and forced her inside with a gun. She didn’t recall actually getting into the vehicle, but she woke up lying in the back, her hips stiff from being in the same position for a while, and a pillowcase smelling of laundry detergent covering her head.

Sherri reported being chained to a pole in a bedroom closet for three weeks. The chain was long enough for her to reach the bed, and she was forced to use a bucket as a toilet. She described hearing loud Mexican music and, although her captors mostly spoke Spanish, she overheard them talking about branding her for someone who might buy her. This led investigators to initially believe she might have been a victim of human trafficking, as detailed in a court document filed on March 3rd.
She attempted to escape multiple times, and after her first try, she was burned on her shoulder as a punishment.

Investigators spoke with Sherri repeatedly over several months, but they couldn’t find any evidence to support what she told them.
On June 22, 2017, she helped FBI artists create sketches of the women, and those sketches were used on wanted posters that were distributed broadly.
In an interview with the FBI on August 13, 2020, she described how one of her kidnappers, the older one, was cruel and responsible for the worst abuse. However, the younger kidnapper was kinder and eventually released her on the side of Interstate 5 near Woodland, California.
In therapy, she described experiencing severe physical and emotional abuse, including being beaten, burned, branded, and given drugs. The therapist diagnosed her with acute post-traumatic stress disorder.

How did Sherri Papini’s kidnapping story fall apart?
In 2019, three years after Sherri went missing, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the case was still being investigated. KRCR TV reported that the FBI was offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the identification of the two women Sherri said were involved in her disappearance.
By the time Sherri spoke with the FBI in August 2020, investigators had concluded her story about being kidnapped wasn’t true. She had been missing for 22 days, but what she claimed happened during that time didn’t match the facts.
When investigators told her about reports that her ex-boyfriend had picked her up in Redding and driven her to Costa Mesa, California, where she stayed with him by choice until she was ready to go, she insisted it wasn’t true.
Besides attending meetings to review potential suspect photos, Keith and Sherri repeatedly contacted the FBI between her return and May 7, 2018, providing them with additional information.
Keith recently told investigators that his wife remembered, during a therapy session, one of her attackers attempting to force a thick liquid down her throat. She managed to wipe her mouth with her underwear afterwards and then fell asleep.
Investigators discovered DNA from an unidentified woman on Sherri’s body and DNA from an unknown man on her clothing, as detailed in a March 3rd filing. These DNA profiles were entered into the national CODIS database. In September 2019, detectives with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office asked the California Department of Justice to conduct a search using familial DNA.
In March 2020, DNA evidence led investigators to a family member of the suspect. This person had two sons, and one of them turned out to be James Reyes, the ex-boyfriend they were investigating.
In June, detectives searched Reyes’ trash at his Costa Mesa home and discovered DNA on a Green Tea bottle that matched DNA found on Sherri’s clothing.
Reyes, known in court documents as “Ex-Boyfriend,” fully cooperated with the investigation and was never accused of any wrongdoing. He told the FBI in an August 10, 2020 interview that he assisted Sherri in leaving, explaining they had previously been engaged and shared a long-standing friendship. He stated that her request for help came as a complete surprise to him.
Reyes stated that Sherri confided in him about physical and sexual assault by Keith, and that the police didn’t offer assistance. Although Sherri’s friends mentioned to police and the media that Keith was controlling and they often argued, there were no official records of Sherri reporting abuse to local authorities.

Investigators discovered, through phone records, that Sherri and Reyes had been communicating since December 2015. Both used prepaid cell phones, making it harder to track their conversations.
According to Reyes’s statement to investigators, Sherri remained at his apartment for the entire three weeks she was missing. She barely ate and, at one point, asked him to burn her shoulder with a wood-burning tool she’d sent him to purchase from Hobby Lobby. Despite not having a television, she followed the news on her phone and, aware that people were searching for her, avoided going out in public.
According to her ex-partner, she cut her own hair and caused most of her own injuries, like bruises and burns. He claims he never physically abused her, but he did admit to helping her with requests, such as shooting a hockey puck off her leg as she asked.
Reyes stated that he drove Sherri back to Northern California because she expressed missing her children, and during the drive, she threw away her prepaid cell phone. He explained to investigators that he didn’t contact the police after seeing news reports about the supposed kidnapping, believing it would be pointless to turn himself in without clear evidence. However, he resolved to cooperate with law enforcement if they contacted him.

When wasĀ Sherri Papini arrested?
On March 3, 2022, Sherri was arrested and accused of both deceiving federal investigators and committing 34 instances of mail fraud.
I was absolutely horrified when I heard about this young mom just vanishing in the middle of the day! It was terrifying for everyone around here, honestly. Apparently, the U.S. Attorney, Phillip A. Talbert, said the whole community was gripped with fear and worry. The Sheriff’s Office jumped on it immediately, and even brought in the FBI to help. I can’t even imagine how many hours they spent chasing down every possible clue, just desperately trying to get her home to her family. It’s just… heartbreaking.
Ultimately, the investigation showed there was no kidnapping. The prosecutor explained that the defendant’s actions wasted valuable time and resources that could have been used to solve real crimes, keep the community safe, and help victims.
Sherri faced fraud charges because she used funds from the California Victim Compensation Board ā state money meant to help victims ā to pay for her own expenses. Court documents show she claimed the money was for medical bills, moving costs, mental health care, and home security upgrades.
Let’s talk about making a home truly supportive after a health challenge. In my experience, it’s about more than just medical bills. In this particular case, funds were allocated ā totaling $30,614.15 ā to cover essential needs like getting her home safely with ambulance transport, ongoing therapy for recovery, and even making the home environment more comfortable with new window blinds. Itās all part of creating a healing and welcoming space.
Between June 5, 2017, and March 8, 2021, she funded what the prosecution described as fake medical care for anxiety and PTSD related to her alleged abduction.

On March 4, 2022, Sherri’s family released a statement saying they were shocked and upset by the way authorities had treated her, especially in front of her children.
According to a statement, Sherri would have gladly gone to the police station if asked, as she’s done previously, and believes the situation could have been handled better there. Sherri and Keith have been cooperative with law enforcement, despite what they feel were attempts to create conflict between them, as well as unprofessional behavior and threats. They are puzzled by the charges and hope to receive more information soon.
Sherri was first considered likely to flee, so she was held in Sacramento County Jail for five nights. However, on March 8th, a judge released her after she posted a $120,000 bond.

When did Sherri Papini admit she lied?
Sherri faced up to 25 years in prison if found guilty on all counts, so she pleaded guilty to making false statements to a federal officer and committing mail fraud. She formally entered her guilty plea in court on April 18, 2022.
Honestly, Iām incredibly disappointed in my own actions and truly sorry for all the hurt Iāve caused. It breaks my heart to think about the pain my story inflicted on my family, friends, and everyone who tried so hard to support me. Moving forward, Iām committed to spending the rest of my life making things right and earning back trust.
As part of the agreement, Sherri was ordered to pay over $300,000 to government agencies she harmed. Prosecutors stated they would ask the judge to give her a relatively light sentence, within the guidelines the court establishes.
After 12 years of marriage, Keith filed for divorce and asked the court to grant him full custody of his children, Tyler and Violet.
After learning the details of Sherri’s plea deal, Keith stated in a court declaration published by the Sacramento Bee that he needs to take strong action to shield his children from the emotional harm caused by their mother and create a more stable and peaceful environment for them.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen many family situations, and this one is particularly heartbreaking. My client claims his children haven’t seen their mother since April 4th, 2022, and she unfortunately missed a planned visit with them. He’s now requesting that any future visitation schedule be based solely on what he feels is best for the kids’ well-being, which is a really important consideration in these circumstances.
Sherri’s disappearance was incredibly hard, especially considering the challenges our family has faced over the past five and a half years. My children and I need time to heal and get back on our feet.
Keith stated his priority is to create a secure and nurturing home for Tyler and Violet, and he feels the requested legal orders would help achieve that and serve the childrenās best interests. He also didnāt want to discuss Sherriās situation in a way that could escalate conflict or draw unwanted media coverage.
He concluded by asking the court to shield his children from the harmful effects of their motherās public image.
In the Hulu series, Keith said he felt deeply embarrassed after the truth about Sherri came out.
He admitted feeling ashamed that she had controlled people, and that he felt like he played a part in it. Heād been very firm in believing she should stay with her children.
He believed Sherri had combined elements from the kidnapping case of Elizabeth Smart, the unsolved 1998 disappearance of Tera Smith, and the novel Gone Girl, along with other similar stories, to create the illusion of her own abduction.

DidĀ Sherri Papini go to prison?
Sherri received an 18-month prison sentence on September 19, 2022, and will then be under supervised release for three years.
After serving 11 months at the Victorville federal prison, she was released in August 2023 to complete her sentence under supervision in the Sacramento area. This involved living in a community-based program managed by a federal reentry office.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Sherri completed her stay at a Sacramento halfway house on September 29, 2023.
Was there a Lifetime movie about Sherri Papini?
Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe this! While Sherri was in prison, Lifetime finally did a movie about her case in July 2023! It’s called Hoax: The Kidnapping of Sherri Papini, and Jaime King plays her! I’ve been following this story forever, and I’m so excited they made a movie ā and that Jaime King is starring! I canāt wait to see it!
The actress shared with Francesca Amiker of TopMob News that she immediately felt there was more to the story when she first learned about the case.
I was really upset by it,” King explained. “This woman appeared to have it all together, but the way her story was presented painted her as a truly awful person who had done something terrible to her family and community. And she definitely made some bad decisions, there’s no question about that.

Where is Sherri Papini now?
Now 43, Sherri was living in Northern California while on supervised release until later in 2026.
Hulu’s The Perfect Wife reported that the production team tried multiple times to reach out to her, but she didn’t respond.
In March, the U.S. Attorney’s office took legal action to collect $340,221.23 from her. This amount includes money she owes as restitution, plus an additional 10 percent to cover legal costs. Her lawyer stated she intends to pay the full amount.
Sherri Papini is committed to fulfilling her financial responsibilities to the court and the government, and will continue making payments as agreed, according to her attorney, William Portanova. He stated that her situation remains unchanged.

Sherri Papini intends to keep up with her court-ordered payments, as she previously committed to doing, according to her attorney, William Portanova. He stated to People magazine that her financial situation remains unchanged.
Court records show Keith has legal custody of his children, Tyler, age 13, and Violet, age 11. Sherri was permitted to visit them for one hour at a time, but these visits had to be supervised by a monitoring agency chosen by the court, as reported by the Redding Record Searchlight.
According to notes from the professional monitor, as reported by the Record Searchlight, Sherri told her daughter in January 2024 that she was writing books and building a business intended to help others.
According to my notes, I told them, ‘Mommy’s now a writer! I’m working on two books. When I say I’m working remotely, it just means I’m at home on my laptop, writing those chapters.’
In the ID documentary Sherri Papini: Caught in a Life, Papini went back to claiming she was actually kidnapped. In an interview with ABC News to promote the show, she stated, āIām not trying to convince anyone of anything. Iām just glad to be able to speak honestly, without fear or needing to lie, like Iāve felt before.ā
Where is Keith Papini now?
Keith has said in interviews and the Hulu series thatĀ heĀ can’t have anything to do with Sherri.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen firsthand how cutting ties with someone toxic can be incredibly empowering. This individual recently shared with me that he’s completely cut off contact with a particular person, and he’s firm about maintaining that boundary. He explained that she’s even attempted to reach out, but he simply can’t allow it. He recognizes her ability to control situations and influence others ā what he calls her ‘power’ ā and understands that engaging with her would only open the door to manipulation. Itās a strong statement about protecting your peace and recognizing unhealthy dynamics.
Tyler and Violet spoke with Sherri on the phone, and Tyler is following the court’s rules for visitation.
Keith said his children are thriving now, but he feels much of their childhood was taken from them. His main focus is ensuring they have a happy, healthy future and are surrounded by love.
In his book, Perfect Wife, he recalled a playful conversation with his son where he asked what surname the boy would choose if he could have any name he wanted.
Tyler remembered thinking, “Is this about my mom?” He also said, “I like our last name, and I don’t think we should change it because of something she did.”
