Where Kayce Was During The Dutton Ranch Fire

The new series Dutton Ranch opens with a devastating fire in Montana, immediately raising questions about where Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) is. Created by Chad Feehan and executive produced by Taylor Sheridan, Dutton Ranch is a sequel and spinoff of Yellowstone, and takes place in the same universe as Marshals, which also focuses on Kayce and airs on CBS.

In the world of Dutton Ranch, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), and Carter (Finn Little) are starting over in South Texas. Away from their family’s Montana ranch, they face new difficulties, make new friends, and clash with powerful figures in Rio Paloma, including Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) who runs the 10-Petals Ranch.

The new show, Dutton Ranch, begins with a tragic fire that destroys the Montana ranch Beth and Rip purchased at the end of Yellowstone. The couple lost almost all of their possessions, prompting them to rebuild their lives in Texas. Surprisingly, they didn’t reach out to Kayce for assistance during this difficult time.

Kayce Was In East Camp During Dutton Ranch’s Fire

Dutton Ranch takes place a year after the events of Yellowstone. This means Kayce Dutton was living at East Camp when the Montana wildfires occurred. Following Kayce’s sale of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch to the Broken Rock Reservation, he, Monica, and their son Tate were happily settled in their new home until Monica sadly passed away from cancer.

The fire at Dutton Ranch was shown in scenes that took place six months before the current events with Beth and Rip. While it’s not entirely clear when everything happens after Yellowstone, the present day at Dutton Ranch likely coincides with the first season of Marshals. That’s because the events in Kayce’s spin-off series happen approximately a year after Yellowstone ends.

Considering the Dutton Ranch fire occurred about six months after the events in Yellowstone, Kayce was probably living at East Camp and also caring for Monica, who was very ill. Given how widespread the Montana fire was in the news, it’s likely Kayce would have known about it, even while at East Camp.

I understand that East Camp is close to the Broken Rock Reservation. Beth and Rip live on a ranch about 40 miles west of Dillon, Montana, which itself is southwest of where the original Dutton Ranch used to be. It seems like if Kayce had reacted quickly, he probably would have had to ride right through the fire to get to them and help.

Dutton Ranch & Marshals Can Have A Future Yellowstone Crossover

The first episode of Dutton Ranch doesn’t actually show Beth getting in touch with Kayce. Instead, Rip mentions he contacted everyone they know, which would have included Kayce. It was Walker who ultimately led Beth and Rip to the Edwards Ranch in Rio Paloma, Texas, and they left Montana right away. Kayce, however, remained at their home in East Camp.

The creator of the Marshals series has hinted at a possible connection to Yellowstone by mentioning characters Beth and Rip. Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth, has also said she’d like to see a crossover happen. With Dutton Ranch likely to talk about Kayce, there’s a chance the Dutton siblings could reunite on screen in the future.

Similar to how the first season of Marshals followed Kayce as he adjusted to his job with federal law enforcement, the first season of Dutton Ranch primarily focuses on getting Beth and Rip settled in Rio Paloma. Any connections to the Yellowstone storyline are still a long way off for both shows.

Both of the new Yellowstone spinoffs, Marshals and Dutton Ranch, are expected to be very successful. Marshals is already confirmed for a second season on CBS, and Dutton Ranch on Paramount+ is also likely to get renewed, suggesting both shows will be on the air for quite some time.

With both “Dutton Ranch” and “Marshals” doing well on Paramount Skydance networks, it looks promising for Kayce and Beth Dutton, and Rip Wheeler, to reunite. Currently, Kayce is settled in Montana, while Beth and Rip are living in Texas.
