PS5’s New Weekly Player Tracker Has Revealed Some Brutal Truths for Fans

Sony’s recently released data tracking player activity on the PS5 is revealing some interesting details about who’s playing – and many fans are surprised by what they’re seeing.

I’m really excited about the new Welcome Hub widget they’re testing! It shows you the ten most popular games being played in your country right now, and even tells you how many people are playing them each week. It’s a great way to see what everyone else is into!

This data is comparable to what we see from Steam, but Steam tracks how many people are playing a game right now. This shows us the total number of different players who started a game within the last week.

Since this feature is still in testing, here’s the data we have for the US, provided by Mystic:

  1. Fortnite: 14.6m
  2. GTA 5: 5.13m
  3. Minecraft: 4.97m
  4. Call of Duty: 4.95m
  5. Apex Legends: 1.72m
  6. Marvel Rivals: 1.58m
  7. Battlefield 6: 1.51m
  8. ARC Raiders: 972k

A couple of games really stand out as likely contenders for the top ten: Roblox is almost guaranteed to be one of them, and we’d also anticipate seeing a popular sports game like NBA 2K make the list.

This list isn’t surprising to us. These are clearly the most popular games on PlayStation, and we expect the top ten to stay pretty consistent each week.

Some players are surprised to still see games like GTA 5 and Minecraft so popular, considering both have been around for over a decade.

All of the games on this list are constantly updated with new content, making them engaging for long-term players. While not all are free-to-play, they all receive ongoing updates and generally rely on small in-game purchases to support development.

Look, it’s no secret that PlayStation makes a ton of money from things like in-game purchases – it’s been true for years. Honestly, I’m not shocked to hear it. But it’s kinda weird how many gamers are surprised by this. It feels like everyone should have seen this coming!

Here’s the simple truth: this explains why Sony is focusing on games that offer ongoing experiences, and why they’re committed to continuing this strategy. The most played games on PlayStation are those designed to be enjoyed for a long time.

You might not want to hear this, but this is the information the platform is seeing on a daily basis.

We at Push Square definitely enjoy self-contained, single-player games, and they remain important for PlayStation. However, the numbers show that players generally prefer games they can play for longer periods, rather than one-time experiences.

It’s now obvious that Sony’s attempt at live service games has failed badly. They’ve disappointed their fans, shut down studios for no good reason, and spent a huge amount of money – hundreds of millions of dollars – on games that were never likely to succeed.

Considering how many people are actually playing these games, it’s hard to disagree with the basic concept, isn’t it?
