Power Ranking Mortal Kombat 2’s 7 Strongest Surviving Characters for the 3rd Movie

Okay, buckle up, because Mortal Kombat II definitely delivered on its promise of being brutal! Seriously, in under two hours, we saw nine major characters bite the dust. And we’re not talking about nameless extras here – this movie offed some seriously important figures. We lost Shao Kahn, a practically god-like villain, and even Liu Kang, who was destined for greatness. Kung Lao, a resurrected fighter, also fell, and a whole bunch of other heroes and villains met their end. Basically, director Simon McQuoid wasn’t afraid to kill off major players, shaking up the entire power structure and setting the stage for what’s coming in Mortal Kombat 3. It’s a bold move, even if some of these deaths might not be permanent.

Who’s the strongest character still standing? While Scorpion isn’t truly alive – he’s still dead, even in the Netherrealm – we can’t really count him as a survivor. We also don’t know what happened to Queen Sindel. She’s died and been brought back as a Revenant multiple times, but she didn’t show up at the end of Mortal Kombat II. If she returns, she’d be a very powerful addition and easily replace the weakest character on our list. For now, though, her status keeps her off the rankings…

7) Johnny Cage

It’s a bit of a shock to see Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, start out as relatively weak in Mortal Kombat II. He’s also unusually humble, as his acting career has fallen apart. However, after Kung Lao’s death, destiny chooses Cage as Earthrealm’s last hope, and he quickly demonstrates impressive fighting skills. Cage edges out Kano for the final spot on this list thanks to the special Arcana power he unlocks at the movie’s end (even though Kano gets a laser eye, he doesn’t show any other abilities). Despite being a little out of practice, Cage’s power will likely grow in the sequel as his confidence increases.

6) Sonya Blade

It’s a close call between Sonya and Jade, but Sonya ultimately wins. While Jade is strong, she lost a fight against Jax in Mortal Kombat II. Sonya sometimes seems distracted during battles, despite her clear abilities. However, she’s incredibly powerful, with a useful energy blast that she doesn’t use often enough. Her military background makes her a skilled strategist, and she’s one of the best close-combat fighters among Earthrealm’s heroes. Her defeat of Sindel really shows what she’s capable of when fighting at her best.

5) Baraka

Okay, so Baraka isn’t shooting lasers or anything, but seriously, this guy is a powerhouse. He’s just pure, raw strength, and deserves a spot among the strongest. Visually, he’s one of the most striking and frankly terrifying characters in the whole series. And it’s not just looks – that vicious bite and those bone spurs he shoots from his arms? Brutal! He’s basically superhuman in terms of strength and how much punishment he can take. Honestly, the only thing that ever stopped him was a low blow from Johnny Cage – and let’s be real, that would drop anyone. I’m really excited to see him in the new movie, I think they’re going to showcase just how powerful he is.

4) Kitana

While Liu Kang’s fate in Mortal Kombat II isn’t definitively stated, his death and the fact that he wasn’t the Chosen One hint that Kitana might be. After all, she’s the one who ultimately defeats Shao Kahn. As the daughter of two powerful figures in MK history, Kitana is highly skilled, thanks to training from both Jade and Shao Kahn. She’s remarkably resilient – surviving an attack that would kill most – and she’s the only hero who faces Shao Kahn without being instantly defeated. These strengths make her a crucial fighter in the Netherrealm, even if…

3) Quan Chi

Quan Chi, played by Damon Herriman, isn’t known for being a strong fighter in Mortal Kombat II, but he’s incredibly powerful nonetheless. His main strength is resurrection – a truly powerful ability in any fictional universe. While he combines magic with some fighting skills in the games, suggesting he’s deceptively capable, he’s also shown other magical abilities beyond simply bringing people back to life. It’s likely he has even more hidden talents. Ultimately, he’s so powerful that he’s expected to be the driving force behind the plot of the next movie, following the events of the first two.

2) Shang Tsung

It’s a bit unfair how Mortal Kombat II treats Shang Tsung. After being the big bad guy in the first movie, Chin Han’s sorcerer is reduced to being Shao Kahn’s helper in the sequel, and doesn’t get much chance to demonstrate his abilities. Though Lord Raiden doesn’t kill him when he attempts to steal Raiden’s power, his fate after that remains unclear. Given his importance as a villain, and with Shao Kahn gone, it seems unlikely they’d leave him out of future stories.

1) Lord Raiden

It’s difficult to imagine anyone surpassing a truly powerful being like Raiden. He’s earned his position as the God of Thunder and Earthrealm’s protector through immense strength. Even when Tadanobu Asano’s character is unexpectedly attacked and nearly killed by Kung Lao, the sheer power radiating from his injury demonstrates his incredible abilities. Combined with the Amulet of Shinnok, this makes Shao Kahn briefly unbeatable. Raiden is a formidable force, and unless a higher power like Shinnok, the One Being, or the Elder Gods appears in Mortal Kombat III, his only real challenge will likely come from Liu Kang when he returns as the Fire God.
