Avengers: Doomsday’s Trailer Quietly Shut Down 1 Theory About Chris Evans’ Captain America

I was so excited when I heard Chris Evans was returning as Captain America! But it looks like a popular theory about how he’s coming back has been proven wrong. The Russo brothers, who directed Avengers: Endgame, are back to direct the next big Marvel movie, which will wrap up the Multiverse Saga. We knew Robert Downey Jr. was returning as Doctor Doom, and it seemed likely Chris would just be playing the Steve Rogers we know and love. Still, because of all the multiverse stuff going on, some fans thought he might be playing a variant of Captain America. But it seems like it’s just the original, which is fantastic news for a long-time admirer like me!

It’s true that when Marvel Studios brought back key creative figures from the original Infinity Saga, many fans were initially doubtful. Some felt the studio was relying too much on the past instead of focusing on its new heroes. However, the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, shown at CinemaCon in 2026, began to change people’s minds. While the trailer had several exciting moments, the biggest reaction came from Chris Evans returning as Captain America and reuniting with Thor.

Chris Evans’ Return Effectively Debunked Theories About Being A Variant In Avengers: Doomsday

Although the trailer for Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday hasn’t been released yet, a description of it has surfaced online, revealing what happens in the promo. The trailer begins with Steve Rogers warmly greeting Thor, saying “hey pal.” To confirm he’s the real Steve Rogers, he summons Mjölnir, Thor’s hammer, proving he’s still worthy – just as he did during the Battle of Earth in Avengers: Endgame. This moment isn’t just a fun nod to fans; it also disproves theories that Chris Evans is playing a different version of Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday.

Considering the importance of alternate realities in Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, it’s possible we’ll see different versions of characters we already know in Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel has been using this idea more and more since introducing it in Avengers: Endgame, as seen in films like Deadpool & Wolverine, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and the Loki series on Disney+. Because we don’t know much about how Chris Evans is returning as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel could use the multiverse to ensure his character still has the satisfying ending he received in Avengers: Endgame.

As a fan, it just doesn’t feel right that this Captain America would act so warmly towards Thor if it wasn’t the same Steve Rogers I’ve seen fight alongside him for years. And honestly, the fact that he can still lift Mjölnir should be proof enough – not just for Thor, but for everyone watching the trailer – that this is the original Steve Rogers we all know and love from the Avengers.

Why It Doesn’t Make Sense For Avengers: Doomsday To Do A Steve Rogers Variant

Beyond those points, it wouldn’t make sense for Marvel to bring Chris Evans back as a variant of his character. He already played a version of himself in Deadpool & Wolverine. Given that Avengers: Doomsday is aiming for a more serious tone, it can’t treat his return as a joke like that movie did. More importantly, using a variant would ruin the excitement and nostalgia fans would feel seeing Evans back in the main MCU timeline. Marvel is already taking a risk by bringing back actors from the earlier films to finish the Multiverse Saga, so Avengers: Doomsday needs to have a strong narrative reason for their return. Bringing Evans back as just a variant would feel like a way to avoid a meaningful story.

It’s a separate question whether Marvel Studios will introduce another version of Steve Rogers, apart from the one we saw reunite with Thor. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe explores the idea of Chris Evans’ character meeting another version of himself – similar to what happened in Avengers: Endgame – it could be a compelling storyline.

Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
