With video game movies and shows becoming increasingly popular and well-received, expectations are very high for the new Resident Evil film. Fortunately, this movie is taking a different approach than previous adaptations by Paul W.S. Anderson and Johannes Roberts. Director Zach Cregger has made it clear this won’t be a direct retelling of the game’s story, but instead will focus on recreating the feeling of playing the game, particularly the tension of managing limited supplies and inventory.
This approach could lead to a more accurate adaptation. The Bio-Organic Weapons (BOWs) from Resident Evil offer a lot of creative freedom, as the games feature a huge range of different enemies. It’s possible the filmmaker was particularly inspired by a distinctive and terrifying enemy found only in Resident Evil Village.
Director Tyler Gillett has mentioned that the scariest moment in Resident Evil, for him, is when Ethan Winters encounters the large, disturbing creature resembling a baby under the Beneviento house in Resident Evil Village. It’s possible a similar creature will appear in the upcoming Resident Evil movie, as Gillett seems to have been deeply affected by it.
The first trailer for Cregger’s Resident Evil movie features a disturbing scene in what appears to be a hospital room. We see the main character, Bryan, looking horrified as something resembling a baby’s head emerges, possibly from a cradle.
The director might have included a creepy baby in the film, potentially referencing a memorable scene from Resident Evil Village, though likely on a smaller scale. He’s already hidden a green herb in the trailer, suggesting there could be many more Resident Evil references hidden throughout the movie.
Instead of closely following the monsters from the games, Cregger’s movie seems happy to create its own threats, though it does include zombies in the Raccoon City setting. For example, there’s a massive creature hiding in the sewers, and another made up of many bodies that’s so huge it struggles to fit through a doorway. This suggests that Bryan will face a wide variety of terrifying enemies in Resident Evil.
