Pedro Pascal’s character, Din Djarin, and his son Grogu are making their feature film debut in The Mandalorian & Grogu. This new Star Wars movie is Lucasfilm’s first big-screen release in several years, so here’s what you should know before it comes out in just a few days.
Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu movie doesn’t start as a fresh story. It continues plotlines and character relationships first introduced in several Disney+ Star Wars shows set after the fall of the Empire. However, the film is also designed to be enjoyable for viewers who haven’t seen all of those shows, making it accessible to a wider audience.
With the new Star Wars movie coming out next week, here’s a quick rundown of what you should know about The Mandalorian & Grogu and where things stand with the entire Star Wars story.
The Mandalorian And Grogu Is A Continuation Of The Mandalorian Series On Disney+
What’s really interesting about The Mandalorian & Grogu is that it’s a direct sequel to The Mandalorian series on Disney+. This makes it unusual for the Star Wars universe, as it’s not often a show made for streaming turns into a full-length movie with the same cast and filmmakers.
The new film will reportedly follow the ongoing story of Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, and his son Grogu. Their close relationship has become a central and beloved part of the Star Wars universe since they first appeared in 2019.
After three seasons of The Mandalorian and a few episodes of The Book of Boba Fett, Din Djarin and Grogu are gearing up for a new adventure – their first movie together! Early trailers indicate the film will be easy for new viewers to enjoy, but also offer plenty for dedicated Star Wars fans who have followed their journey.
When The Mandalorian And Grogu Is Set In The Star Wars Timeline
Similar to other recent live-action Star Wars shows on Disney+, The Mandalorian & Grogu is set during the New Republic Era. This is the 30-year period following the Empire’s defeat in the original Star Wars movies and before the First Order came to power in the sequel trilogy.
The shows The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, and Skeleton Crew all take place around five years after Return of the Jedi, which is about 9 years after the Battle of Yavin. Since The Mandalorian and Grogu continues right after season 3 of The Mandalorian, the new movie will likely be set around 9 or 10 years after the Battle of Yavin too.
Din Djarin And Grogu’s New Status Quo After The Mandalorian Season 3
The third season of The Mandalorian concluded with Din Djarin and Grogu beginning a fresh chapter in their relationship as father and son. Having assisted Bo-Katan Kryze in reuniting the Mandalorian clans and retaking Mandalore from Moff Gideon’s Imperial forces, Din formally adopted Grogu, giving him the full name Din Grogu. Din also committed to working with the New Republic, focusing on locating and dealing with remaining Imperial leaders in the Outer Rim.
Trailers for The Mandalorian & Grogu confirm Din Djarin will continue battling Imperial leaders seen briefly in Season 3 of The Mandalorian. It also appears Din Djarin and Grogu are still living on their settled homestead on the planet Nevarro, where they moved at the end of the last season.
Who Are The Main Villains Of The Mandalorian & Grogu?
It looks like The Mandalorian & Grogu will focus on two main groups of villains. The first is a group of warlords we first saw in season 3 of The Mandalorian, who are part of the Imperial Shadow Council. They command stormtroopers and use older Imperial equipment, like AT-ATs, showing that remnants of the Empire still pose a significant threat in the Outer Rim, even after the Empire’s fall.
I’m really excited about the direction they’re taking with the Hutts in the new Mandalorian & Grogu movie! It seems Jabba the Hutt’s relatives, a brother and sister duo known as The Twins, are going to be a big deal. We first met them in The Book of Boba Fett where they were trying to take control of the Hutt Cartel after Jabba’s death. From the trailers, it looks like they’ve even captured Din Djarin and demanded he remove his helmet – which, as any Mandalorian fan knows, is a huge deal and a serious breach of their code! I definitely expect them to be major villains in the film.
Jeremy Allen White Will Play Rotta The Hutt, Son of Jabba The Hutt
A major surprise in the movie is the return of Rotta the Hutt. First seen as a baby in the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Rotta was Jabba the Hutt’s son and an important character in the story. Now, the character appears in live-action as an adult, with Jeremy Allen White, star of The Bear, providing his voice.
Based on the trailers, Rotta seems to be a powerful gladiator, and he’s definitely the most physically impressive Hutt we’ve seen in a Star Wars project so far. It will be interesting to discover his backstory and what he’s been up to since his father died.
Expect Some Familiar Animated Star Wars Faces Coming To Live-Action
In addition to Rotta, fans who have enjoyed Star Wars animated series can look forward to seeing some other well-known characters appear in live-action for the first time.
Zeb Orrelios, a character from Star Wars Rebels, will be back! He made a quick appearance in season 3 of The Mandalorian, and it seems he’ll be working closely with Din Djarin, helping him with missions for the New Republic.
Trailers for the new Star Wars film have excited fans by revealing that the popular bounty hunter Embo will appear in live-action for the first time. Embo was a skilled hunter featured in several episodes of the Clone Wars animated series, and was voiced by Lucasfilm’s Dave Filoni.
The Mandalorian Season 4’s Fate Is Currently Unknown
Just to clarify, The Mandalorian & Grogu isn’t taking the place of a fourth season of The Mandalorian exactly. Creator Jon Favreau had already written scripts for season four, but they decided to make a theatrical movie instead. However, Favreau essentially started writing the movie from the beginning.
Season four was planned to expand on storylines from Dave Filoni’s Ahsoka series and further develop connections to Grand Admiral Thrawn, while also bringing back members of the Imperial Shadow Council from season three. Lucasfilm hasn’t confirmed if the season is still in development, but its future likely hinges on how well the upcoming movie performs.
Why The Mandalorian & Grogu Is So Important For Star Wars’ Future
The Mandalorian & Grogu is a significant release for Star Wars because it marks the franchise’s return to movie theaters after a four-year gap, following 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. After focusing on streaming shows for a while, Lucasfilm is once again creating major cinematic events for Star Wars fans.
Beyond continuing the adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu, The Mandalorian & Grogu is also expected to lead into a future crossover movie being developed by Dave Filoni. This movie is planned as a major conclusion to the current storylines set in the New Republic era. Many believe it will be similar to the Heir to the Empire story from the old Expanded Universe, with Grand Admiral Thrawn as the primary villain, bringing all these separate storylines together. Therefore, The Mandalorian & Grogu could be very important in establishing the events of Filoni’s upcoming film.
The Mandalorian & Grogu is set to release in theaters on May 22nd from Lucasfilm.
