Despite plans for a new version, Michael Mann’s crime thriller series, which first came out 42 years ago, is surprisingly doing well on streaming platforms.
Michael Mann has had a remarkable career in film and television for over sixty years, becoming a leading figure in American filmmaking. He began his career as a writer on the popular 1970s TV show Starsky & Hutch, and later made his feature film directing debut with Thief in 1981.
Michael Mann achieved international recognition with films like the 1986 thriller Manhunter and the 1992 historical drama The Last of the Mohicans, which starred Daniel Day-Lewis. Many consider his 1995 crime drama Heat to be his greatest work. The film, known for its impressive cast, famously brought Robert De Niro and Al Pacino together on screen for the first time.
Michael Mann is known as a highly respected film director, with movies like The Insider, Ali, and Collateral solidifying his reputation. However, he also has a strong background in television. His influential 1984 TV series has recently found a new audience through streaming, and a remake is currently in the works.
Premiering on NBC in September 1984, Miami Vice ran for five seasons and 114 episodes before ending in June 1989. The show is considered a landmark and highly influential police drama, and it helped launch the career of Don Johnson. Michael Mann was an executive producer and writer for the series, and he later wrote and directed a film based on it in 2006.
The classic show Miami Vice is currently very popular on Apple’s on-demand streaming service, consistently ranking among the top two shows since it became available on May 13th. This is happening at the same time a reboot movie, Miami Vice ’85, with Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan, is beginning development.
As a huge movie fan, I think getting actors like Gerard Butler and Michael Jordan involved in a Miami Vice reboot could have really given the show a boost on streaming. Plus, Michael Mann is finally making Heat 2, and Butler’s in that alongside Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio! That’s definitely got everyone revisiting Mann’s older films – and that’s a good thing!
With a classic show like Miami Vice, success on streaming services was almost guaranteed, but Michael Mann’s continued influence and recent work likely boosted its popularity. Fans are hoping this streaming success will generate excitement for the upcoming Miami Vice movie reboot and other projects from Mann.
