If you’re just learning about the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Trilogy and how it’s different from the original game, prepare for some surprises! Without giving away any plot details, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth add some major new elements, even introducing completely different timelines.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi had stated the remake trilogy wouldn’t drastically alter the original story, so he was surprised by how much fans have speculated, particularly about the third film. He’s intentionally staying quiet about it all to keep the story’s twists a secret.
In an interview with Nintenderos (as reported by GamesRadar), Suda51 explained that he wants players to interpret the story themselves, rather than feel like they’re searching for one correct solution. He and the team intentionally left room for different understandings and experiences.
The lively discussion this design has sparked among fans tells me it’s achieving what we hoped for. While not everyone loves it, I suspect the designer anticipated a mixed reaction.
We still don’t have a release date or even a title for the third part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, but Square Enix says they’re making good progress on the announcement. As for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 players will finally be able to play it starting June 3rd.
