Batgirl is a fantastic, yet often underestimated, character in the DC universe. For decades, different women have taken on the role, each determined to protect Gotham City just like Batman and Robin. As a key member of the Terrific Trio, she’s consistently proven herself a hero, even facing opposition from Batman himself. He’s known for wanting to control situations, and often discourages Batgirl’s crime-fighting, but that’s never stopped any woman who’s worn the cowl from stepping up to save the day.
The identity of Batgirl isn’t tied to just one character. Over the years, several heroes have taken on the Batgirl role, each bringing their own strengths to it. But who was the best Batgirl? We’re going to look at every woman who’s worn the mask and rank them, considering their effectiveness as a hero, how memorable and cool they were, and how enjoyable they were to watch in action. Let’s celebrate all the amazing women who have been Batgirl!
5) Helena Bertenelli

Helena Bertinelli is famous as the Huntress, but she briefly became Batgirl during the “No Man’s Land” storyline. When Batman disappeared, she used the Batgirl costume and identity to instill fear, something she couldn’t achieve as Huntress. While she kept the symbol of the Bat alive in Gotham and designed what many consider the best Batgirl costume ever, she wasn’t truly suited for the role. She constantly tried to copy Batman’s style, but couldn’t replicate his control. Her impulsive nature and lack of discipline unfortunately led to tragic consequences. Despite being a fan of the character, Helena took on the Batgirl mantle hoping to be Batman, and that approach ultimately didn’t work for her.
4) Bette Kane

Though not the original Batgirl, Bette Kane is credited with establishing the idea of a Bat-Girl. Appearing during the Silver Age of comics, she started as a female version of Robin, much like her aunt, the first Batwoman, was to Batman. Bette was a spirited and capable spy who enjoyed a successful period as a superhero before stepping back to pursue professional tennis. While often portrayed as needing rescue, she’s also a founding member of the Titans West and currently operates as the independent hero Flamebird, showcasing her strengths and resilience.
3) Stephanie Brown

As a critic, I’ve always found Stephanie Brown’s take on Batgirl the most compelling. She’s the ultimate underdog – even Barbara Gordon didn’t initially want her as the Batgirl! Everyone always points out she started as the least polished member of the Bat-Family, but that’s what makes her journey so fantastic. She wasn’t going to let a lack of experience hold her back. It was pure determination and a need to prove herself that really drove her. Watching Stephanie grow into a truly phenomenal hero is, in my opinion, one of the best Batgirl stories ever told. After all, what’s more Batgirl than becoming the hero you’re supposed to be, despite everyone doubting you?
2) Barbara Gordon

Barbara Gordon, often considered the definitive Batgirl, truly shaped the character into what it is today. She’s a brilliant strategist and arguably DC’s best hacker. Despite facing obstacles from her father and even Batman, she remained dedicated to her principles, constantly improving and fighting crime until Batman himself recognized her value. Babs is a resilient hero who never gives up, even in the face of immense challenges. She consistently overcomes any obstacle to save the day, and her impact on the Batgirl legacy deserves to be remembered.
1) Cassandra Cain

Cass is widely considered the best Batgirl ever. Originally trained as an assassin, she lived on the streets for ten years before Barbara Gordon took her in and helped her become Batgirl. Both Barbara and Batman recognized Cass’s incredible dedication – arguably even surpassing Batman’s – and entrusted her with the role. Beyond her skills, Cass is deeply compassionate and driven to help others. While given the opportunity to be Batgirl, she truly earned the title through her own efforts.
Cass was trained from birth to be a fighter, but she refused to follow that path and instead became a hero. Despite facing incredible challenges – including difficulty understanding others – she worked tirelessly to earn the title of Batgirl. She didn’t just fill the role; she transformed it, proving she could stand alongside Batman and offer something unique to Gotham City. She honored Barbara Gordon’s legacy while forging her own path and defining what it truly means to be Batgirl.
